REPORTER ATTACKED
• BY FITZGERALD
Clerk Threatens to Take the
Life of Chicago News
paper Man.
Chicago. March 2.—George E. Fitz
gerald, the teller In charge of the cage
at the nub-treasury from which $173,-
000 waa stolen, haa suecexxfully met the
attacks of John E. Wilkie. chief of the
aecret men, according to atatementa of
ofllttala.
Some of the ferocity of lh# aweattng
procena may be gained frone the fact
that'lt In alleged that the teller fainted
under the dtdeal and it waa necessary
to revive him. That he had an un
pleasant time was proved when he left
the Inquisitorial chamber on the eighth
floor of the Federal building, for he at
tacked a newspaper reporter and
threatened to kill him. Those who wit
nessed the assault were certain he
meant every word he said, for he bran
dished a blackjack about him as he
uttered the threut.
Threatens to Kill.
The attack came as the finale of an
attempt on the part -of-Chlef- Wilkie
and Captaiti Porter to throw all news
paper men off the scent, and they were
so chagrined when caught at their own
gume that they announced In the fu
ture they would refuse to give the pub
lic the benefit of their Information. The
chief and the captain thought to con
vince the newspaper men that Fltzger-
ald was not In the room by permitting
them to search It. Fltagernld w
doubled up In a clothes closet.
Fitzgerald fied and chanced to en
counter the reporter In a part of the
corridor. He did not speak a word,
according to those in the vicinity, but
struck him twice with his fist and
knocked him down. Then he drew his
blackjack anff threatened to kilt.
Warrant ?er Attacking.
Later Fitzgerald said the reporter
had visited his home and told his wife
he would print stories of her husband's
private llfo If ahe did not produce a
photograph of the teller. As a result of
the attack a warrant was sworn out In
municipal court charging Fttagemkt
with assault.
Chief Wilkie aald the government did
n**T-TlRvr- the number* nt the missing
hills, and if they liad l>e«*n turned over
to-any outride bunk since xluilr disap
pearance from the sub-treasury, the
government will not be able to locate
them.
