March ..—In an opinion rendered by tb* attorney general to tho president, bearing on the legality of the action of tbs South Carolina autboritlaa In bringing to the United Htatea a shipload of Immigrants for work In various branches of Industry In that stats. The Immigrant* ware brought to th* United Slates through the efforts of Htate Immigration Commissioner E. J. Watson. South Vitally Interested. "The matter of Immigration la pot only of vital Importance to th* whole nation, but to ue of the Bouth It la of extraordinary Interest," said Henator A. C. There are to be three com missioners from private life, to hr named by the president. I do not know Just when we will meet to form our organisation, but we will be com pelled to await the president's action In the niBtter of appointing the reel of the commission. "My opinion Is that the majority of Southern people are anxious to secure labor from foreign countrlee If we can get the right sort of Immigrants. Per haps an Influx of Europeans will help us to solve the negro question In the South. All over the Bouth the cry Is for more labor. The negroes are de serting the farms, preferring life In the towns or seeking employment In rail road or lumber ramps. 1 was obliged to let a considerable amount of land go uncultivated this year because of the Inublllly to secure farm laborers." OP A.&W.P. TRACK Since the announcement that the At lanta, Birmingham and Atlantic would not operate trains Into Atlanta from LaOrange over the rails of the Atlanta and West Point. It has developed that u higher authority whispered Into the ear of ('. A. Wlckershatn. president of iho West Point Route, and the deal was Immediately called off. This higher voice Is credited to the Central of Georgia railroad, backed up hy Its owner, the Southern railway. The Atkinson system la somewhat of a competitor of the Central of Georgia In the south western portion of the state and with Its steamship system. This possibly explains partially the main reasons for choking the new road off from Atlanta. The change of front of the manage ment of tlx* West Point Route caused considerable surprise, as the officials of the Atkinson system had made all an- nouncemets and arrangements for In augurating through service from Brunswick to Atlanta laat Hunday. As It stands now. no serv ice over the new road will begin until Its completion next fall. In the meanwhile It Is ex pected that the Central will do what It can to keep the Atkinson system from making arrangements to enter the At lanta Terminal station.
