iMHMadii THE ATLANTA GEORGIAN AND NEWS. TKUMDAY. MARCH U, 1m. •> ' f?" W ITH the dust of past centuries forming a halo around its filmy beauties, with the tragedies and comedies of long-forgotten'ages interwoven with its sagas, the story of lace is indeed an interesting epoch in the history of this gay old world of ours. Beginning so far in the haze oflegend as to be lost in the indefinite of past ages, there loom from this far-away period many tales of this wondrous fabric. Softer than silk, more filmy than the gauzy wing of the bright-hued butterfly, the reminiscent stories which radiate from past centuries delve still deeper into the mysteries of long, long ago. Ages before Augustus Caesar was ruler of many kings and Herod reigned in Jerusalem there were specimens of woven fabrics which in texture are marvelously like the lace of later days, but history is strangely silent when the musty tomes of those long-forgotteti days are searched for definite data. •* j I X nothing is the rage for elaborate trimming effects and combinations # of various kinds more clearly evidenced than in-the fact that laces are having an equal share of popular favor with embroideries. Time was when the popularity of lace meant that embroideries were out of the running and vice versa; now both are employed on one garment, and 'separately each has a wider scope of uses than ever before. Cluny Laces Cluny, yes, indeed. Cluny with its hundred possibilities. Cluny is here again, that is an indisput able fact; and that it will repeat its extraordinary success of several seasons ago is certain. It may be as well to mention here that the return of Clunys this season was predicted in our lace buying several months ago. The influence of this movement is noticeable in many of the new patterns of Venices and other laces in which the Cluny idea is represented. Black silk goods, hand made and machine-made, and the same in white are counted on for a considerable popularity. Cluny sets from the very narrowest to the widest in cream, white and blade. ( Irish Crochet Lace Irish crochet lace has come into its own again, aft er being for a time elbowed aside by the extraordinary fsd for the baby variety. Irish crochet is more than good; it is claxuoreu tor, sought after. There is immi nent danger of a shortage in the market of the hand made goods, even at this early stage of the season. The yearly output of these laces is naturally limited, as only expert bands can produce them, and the number of them is not large. But we’ve guarded carefully this point for you. m Very wide bands and edges, large motifs and me- dalliona, separable galloons and festoon effects com prise the variety of forms in these goods, which are fre quently most deceptive replicas of the hand-made de- of antique origin. Baby Irish, Too But Baby Irish has not been counted out of a place. No, nol Baby Irish fits in too well, into too many places to be dropped or even snubbed. Baby Irish will be seen both in the frocks of washable weaves and more expensive materials. Alencon When a.fine lace is called for—“Alencon”—as on bodices. Beautiful bits created, in silk. Designs here galore for the trimming of frail translucent fabrics of which evening dresses must grow. Alencon laces in matched sets—something novel, but the pedestal of this lace collection is novelness and loveliness. Black Laces Confidence in black laces seeems to grow as the season advances. Few, if any, of the varieties shown in white, cream and ecru goods have not been developed in blaek silk laces, and in addition a greater diversity of combination effects than was eyer known before. Nar row black Chantillys and Mechlins are as popular as ever. And the Vais Even Valenciennes is more strongly intrenched in .favor than ever. Round Thread Vais, in Match Sets. Ruby Vais., in Match Sets. Baby Irish Vais., in Match Sets. Applique Vais., in Match Bets. Real Vais., in Match Sets. Motifs, Galloons, Medallions The greatest stock we’ve ever had of these. Festoon effects, deep points, rounded or sharp, elaborate and wide motifs and separable galloons, all find representation in both the/white and the black silk laces. The triangular pattern is a conspicuous one, and others are equally effective, but nondescript. * , It has been a long time since rose point has been so much in evidence as in the Spring display. Some of this machine goods is exquisitely fine, and the design is so generally admired it is rather surprising it has ever been neglected. Lace medallions in cream and ecru. Princess me dallions in cream and black, Cluny medallions in white | or black. Filet and Cluny combinations in medallion shapes. Irish and Venice combinations and Batiste. and Irish combined—there’s no end to them. Filet Filet Laces are decidedly in the lead and all of the old, time-honored designs, as well as many new ones in which are suggestions of Cluny, Venice, Mirecourt and embroidered net effects have been added to the list of candidates for popular consideration. ~ .
