The trial of 15-ye.r-old Jennie Burch offered ■ most peculiar
study in criminology. The girl poisoned a child whom she was nursing
and attempted suicide. The reason givan for the erime was that she wae
to be parted from her little charg* and loved it too well to bear the
separation.

which, since Monday, hue been trying
Jennie Rurch, aged 15, for murder of
Wilbur Wlnshlp. late yeeterday nfter-
noon returned a verdict of "not guilty,
by rMson of Insanity." Justice Miller
at once ordered her committed to the
asylum for the criminal Insane at Mat-
teswan.

dried her tears, Mrs. Herbert Wlnshlp,
tho mother of the baby to whom Jennie
gave the poisoned peuch. went to her t j
say good-bye.
In spite of her grief over her baby's
death. Mrs. Wlnshlp could not forget
the girl she had reared, and tried to
cheer her. She clasped the girl in her
arms aud kissed her and told her that
she freely forgave her.
Herbert Wlnshlp, the father of tho
I poisoned baby, also told Jennie he had

the older child, should visit her at tho
asylum.

Cartersville. Ga., March 29.—Carters-
vllle Lodge No. 42, Knights of Pythlus,
has purchased the opera houao from the
city of Cartersville and will begin nt
onto to prepare It for a lodge room.
For many years the opera house In
this city has been declared to be unsafe,
and It has been condemned several
time?, but no action was taken until
recently, when tho building committee
of the city council caused It to be ex-
nmlned by a party of building experts.
The experts reported the building to be
In a very unsafe condition, and advised
that It be Immediately repaired or torn
away.
The city was unable to make the ncc.
essary repairs, and It was decided to
sell It to the Knights of Pythias.
Tho Knights of Pythias lodge will re
pair the building and make such Im
provements upon it as will make it one
of the finest lodge rooms In the state.
Efforts nro now being made to Induce
capitalists to build a new flrst-cluss
opera house in Cartersville.

Whelchel died here Wednesday, mak
ing the fourth aged citizen to die here
this year. Mr. whalchel'a age was 82,
he having lived In Dahlonega contln-

Tueiday Mrs. Nancy Bruce, aged
83 yeare, waa burled.
Loat month Reese Crlsaon died at the
age of 81, and Mrs. Anderson, aged
90. also died.

General Clement A. Evan,, one of the
best known Confederate officers In the
South, will be chief of staff to Govern
or Hoke Smith.
After General Evana declined the
proffer of the adjutant generalehlp for
the eecond time, Governor Smith
made him the offer of the position of
chief of staff, which he ha* accepted.
Under the administration of Govern
or Smith there will be only twenty-
eight members of his staff, the new
law going Into effect then. Under the
new law It te alio necessary for the
appointees to have had some military
experience.
Governor Terrell hae about 150 mem
bers of hie staff, and under a special
arrangement will be allowed to keep
them until the end of his term.
The appointment of General Evans
ae chief of the staff will please all sec
tions of the state. As chief of staff,
he will be In a position to give Gov
ernor Smith strong aid In military
matters generally.
General Evans had a splendid war
record. He enlisted as a private In
company E, Thlrty-flrst Georgia, In
1861, at the age of 26 years. He rose
rapidly to major; then In the spring
of 1862 was made a colonel. He was
with General Gordon In the memorable
baitlo of Spottsylvanla. In the fall of
1864 he was made a major general. He
was at Appomattox at the surrender.
General Evans was appointed a mem
ber of iho prison commission by Gov
ernor Atkinson and has twice been re
elected by the people,
