BACHE A CO., AND BARTLETT, FRAZIER & CARRINGTON# PRIVATE VY!RE3 TO ALL POINTS, New York, March 29.—Tho more confident feeling noted In flnahclal cir cle. yesterday and the day before wa* even more strongly manifest In today’, market. With London closed for the Kaster holidays, It appeared posslblo that the day would be a dull one on the local stock exchange. Account had not been properly taken, however, of the fact that a considerable short In terest had been left uncovered and that the dealings of the preceding days of tho week had emphasised their ability to close In their obligations, except by bidding up prices. It was tills which chiefly reflected In this morning's movement. The market lay quiet for an hour, and then hardened slightly. But after tin* first- hour buying back of stocks sold for the short account start ed in numerous directions and the trad ing assumed for a while considerable animation. Price, rose ea.ily, showing that the volume of offering, nt any- thing like recent levels was extremely limited. The rise was helped by the publication of advunre estimates of the weekly bank statement, Indicating nn unusually heavy gnln in cash holdings. Some attention was paid also to the advices from Washlnvton that the pres- Idem would intervene to settle the threatened Vailway strike In the West, and that he would at an early date set forth views on the question of railway supervision which would tend to' re- ndlvldual case*. Ncs oVrk, March 29.—The stock market opened Im-milur with prices, however, gen erully higher. The gidus ruu from point, the tatter being umile hr New Central, Itenilllg it ml Atchison. At the end of ten Great -) ltt» London and all the continental market* dosed, the market here ua* left almost wholly In the hands of room trad ers. The great majority of these took nn aggressive position on tho bull side from the opening, atul bought and hid up,th» stock* lu which the lurgeat short Interest I* believed to exist. The price movements were nearly all to higher levels. Government bouds unchanged. Otbei bonds firm. New York, March 29.—Bartlett, Fra iler & Carrington: Market opened dull with a slight Improvemertt over last night's figure*. There wus some cov ering of ahort*. and certain room traders evidenced the deposition to bid price* up. There did not seem to be any volume of stock pressing on the market. Advices from Chicago are to the effect that there will not be a strike, and this gave tone to the early market. It Is said that this week’s bank state ment will 1m? a favorable exhibit of im proved conditions. The market at noon Is still professional and dull, and seems to lu* taking a rest, preparatory to n holiday. It is thought by some that London being closed Monday*, the New York market might be bid up, so ns to Induce short covering Tuesday morn ing. This has not been the first time that this market move has been suc cessfully accomplished. Should any In junction be obtained against the pay ment of Southern Pacific dividend by the Aransas Pass bondholders. It Is not thought that It will lie any length of of time, but will be quashed.
