unchanged. Apprehension over the
difficulty of aettllng short engagements
by tenders, owing to the scarcity of
tenderable cotton. Is showing Itself by
the advance In the May option and this
buying supports our markets. Our
shorts are drawing out way ahead of
time and are transferring Into July or
tho now crops. This operation Is per
fectly Justified by circumstances nnd
even suggested by the nominal discount
of new crops under the dangerous sum-
mer months. Uy Buch a transfer nil
possible manipulation can be avoided.
An official forecast for frost Tuesday
morning In northwest Texas. Arkansas
and the territories also caused some
buying. Weather conditions over
Sunday were quite favorable. Moder
ate showers covered the entire eastern
half of the belt. Indications are for
clearing and colder weather In the
northwestern and central states, pos
sibly further rains In the far eastern
states and In south Texas, where
storm center la located. According to
the latest reports the rain and hall
storms of last week make replanting
necessary In portions of Alabama. Cor
respondence from Texas says there Is
a large Increase in acreage, particularly
In the northwest, owing to Immigra
tion and conversion of grain lands Into
cotton. The spot market Is very quiet
so far, but the advance In futures may
cause some business later on. Cover
ing by Mny shorts continues to push
the market and that option advanced
over July.
New York, April 8.—J. 8. Bache &
Co.: Prices were firm this morning.
Although the Liverpool market was
slightly below our parity, there was not
much selling from abroad. Though
roomBentlment was Inclined to be bear
ish, at the same time there was a dis
position among the traders not to be
caught short of cotton during the pres
ent uncertainty as to the weather con
ditions in the South. There seems to be
very little disposition to take uny In
terest In the new crop months, and
