The New Y’ork Commercial: It waa said
dnting tbe troublous time* In the stock
tnnrket that the reason there were no fail
ures reported was that stock bouses, as a
rule, bad quit speculating on their own ac
count. and satisfied themselves with doing
a safe and conservative commission busi
ness. According to reports In circulation
In Wall street, however, many houses have
not kept clear of the market, tbe conse
quence being that sometimes when custom-
era have applied for their profits, the lat
ter have not been forthcoming, they hav
ing been added to tbe losses of tbe brokers.
The story was circulated Tuesday that
a short account of 20,000 shares lu Erie was'
covered In this market on Monday, but
that the buying on this account was offset
by tbe liquidation of a corresponding
amount of, stock In Loudon on behalf of uu
exhausted American operator. The cover
ing of the short account made tbe stock
juore plentiful here, but the effect was
Ibeutrallied by the other occurrence.
“Dealing In tbe copper stocks of lafe has
been doue mainly on rumors," said au ex

for export at the seaboard today. This
action of the foreigners gladdened the
hearts of the bulls and caused the
boars to wince. Many of thone who
