arrangements to bring his family here

MRS. BROUGHTON
SEVERELY HURT
Although still suffering excruciating

BACK TO PRISON LIFE
AFTER ELEVEN YEARS
. A negro who escaped from a Georgia
convict camp eleven years ago. and
who had gone to Sumter' county,
changed his name, married and raised
a family, was captured at DeSoto,
Humter county, last week.
Bert Kelly was sent up for life from
Jasper county In 1894. In 1898 he es
caped from one of tha camps, and
nothing had been heard of him since.
Last week Sheriff K. L. Bell, of Sum
ter, was Informed that the negro was
living at DeSoto In that county, under
the name of Will Brown.
The negro was arrested and con
fessed that he was Bert Kelly who had
escaped eleven years ago. Now he will
have to go back to the penitentiary and
serve the rest ot his life.
TRIES TO DIE AT
CATHEDRAL DOOR
Rome, April 18.—Excitement was
caused In the neighborhood of St. Pe
ters yesterday by a youth -of 19. who
attempted to commit suicide with a re
volver at the entrance of the cathedral.
The would-be suicide explained at
the hospital that »he had partaken of
the communion before the shooting.

Washington. April 17.—Never tn the
hletory of the United States navy has
there been such a formidable array of
war ships as that which will gather tn

While the Jamestown aggregation ot
fighting aea monsters will not quite
equal that of Oyster bay In numerical
strength. It will aurpnss It In fighting
power, and counting the foreign ves,
sela of war which will form a part of
the naval display, the Jamestown fleet
will be superior to the review of lust
fall.
Rear Admiral Robley D. Evans will
be tn command of the Jaincetown fleet,
which will consist of thirty-six war
vessels. There will be sixteen flrst-
class and one second-class battleshlsp
whereas the Oyster Bay fleet contained
on' twelve battleshlpe.
Preparations are being confpleted by
the ter-centcnnlal commission for the
participation by government ofllclals
and members of the diplomatic corps,
who w ill be the guests of the commis
sion at the opening ceremonies of the
Jamestown Exposition, on Hampton
Roads, April 24.
Nearly every embassy and legation In
this city has accepted Invitations to be
guests of the commission on the trip
from Washington to the Exposition und
return.
Negress Fight at Shop.

Douglasvitle, Ga., April 18.—At Win
ston. five miles west of this place, a
serious cutting affair occurred Tuesday
night. Charles Johnson, a negro, went
to the blacksmith shop of James Polk
and engaged In a quarrel with Frank
Redman, another negro. Redman start
ed at Johnson with a heavy black-
smith’s hammer, when Johnson cut
Redman so badly that he will very like
ly die.

Brunswick during the flrst thrse

wreck which occurred yeeterday on the
Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic rail
road at Augntlla, a few miles from
Brunswick, Cal Green, of this city, the
engineer, was killed. Mr. Green was
an okl oltlxen' of Brunswick. He is
survived by hla father and mother an<l
three children. •

Atlanta's experience.
All the facts and figures that can be
obtained about Atlanta's system are
given the greatest publicity possible.
The almost complete unanimity with
which the people of Atlqnta voted more
bonds to improve the system Is being
used as a strong argument.

office of United States collector of rev-
enue for the eastern district of Tennes

tot to Chattanooga In the near future.
Since the prohibition wave swept over

a poor field.

Riley came up to vtalt her from Waah-
Ington, Ga, and death overtook him
auddenly.

For many years he wua the peraonnl
body servant of General Toomba, mak

him, and remaining faithful until the
Reaper had lain the mighty heart and
brain of Robert Toombs In the grave.
Since then Riley has Uvod In Wash
ington, Ga, where he was known >(
everyone and esteemed for hla sterling
worth and character. From General
Toombs he had imbibed an old-time
dignity and courtesy seen only In the
negroes of the days of slavery.
On Wednesday the body of the faith
ful old aervant w«s taken back to
Washington, where It waa laid to rest.

Chattanooga. Tenn, April 17.—The
Southern Steel Company haa closed a
contract for a battery of 400 coke ovens
at its plant at Dunlap, 40 miles from
Chattanooga, on the Nashville, Chat
tanooga and St. Louis railroad. The
contract calls for an expenditure of
$250,000.

Brunswick, Ga, April 18.—Ida Camp
bell, a colored woman, shot Jesse Un
ion, a neg.-o turpentine hand, who, she
claims, tried to assault her. Union had
gone to the woman's home and grasped
her throat and attempted the assault,
when she released herself from his
grsap nnd securing a rifle fired four
shots, three of which took effecL
