New York, April 19.—"I was excited.
I feared the notoriety for my wife and
family. 1 did not want my name In the
papers, although I was entirely Inno
cent. I would have given all I pos
sessed to spare my family. When I
explained this to Detective Reardon,
he said 32,000 would about fix It. Any
proposition I mod* to the district at
torney was to spare my family."
This was the statement made today
through his lawyer, Daniel O'Reilly, by
Benedict Glmbel, vice president and
secretary of one of the largest depart
ment stores In Philadelphia, who was
arrested In front of the Vanderbilt
mansion on Fifth avenue while riding
In a cab with Iver Clark, aged 16.
Glmbel had sent a note to the lad's
home at the Hotel Calumet, telling him
to meet him at he Cafe Martin and
lake a cab ride. The boy's mother In'
tercepted the note- and sent word to
the district attorney's office. Detectvles
followed the cab and arrested Glmbel.
Detective Reardon was offered 32,000
by Glmbel and promised a life com
petency If he would hush up the arrest
and Assistant District Attorney Krotej
was offered 350,000.
Even when the matter reached the
Tombs police court Glmbel had not de
spaired of saving himself from noto
riety, and through an agent he offered
the reporters In court any amount of
money they might demand If they
would suppress the fact of his arrest.
It Is said that Glmbel was willing to
pay 3500,000 to escape prosecution and
publicity.
He waa held In bond of 36,000 for his
appearance In the Tombs court tomor
row.

of New York, a former Democratic
leader, who, with his wife, Is a guest
at the home of J. \V. Campbell, In an
Interview last night said; . _
“Yes, I am for Bryan for president,
and he will be the nominee of the Dem
ocratic party and will carry New York
state against Roosevelt by a good ma
jority. The people of the country havo
great faith In Mr. Bryan, and the poll,

now considered visionary by the busi
ness Interests of the country.
"President Roosevelt's personal pop
ularity Is largely duo to his Democratic
Ideas and even Governor Hughes, of
New York, Is a good enough Democrat
for me. I would not be surprised to see
Hughes nominated with Bryan for vice
president, and If these men compose tho
Democratic ticket they Will sweep the
country. The Issue* will be squarely
drawn In the next campaign.
