“PROPHETS LANDING," by Edwin
Asa Dlx. (Chas. Scribner's Bons.)
It Is a great relief to And a New
England story free of that acute dls-
lect that seems to afflict and distort
'a majority of such stories.
"Prophets Landing" Is such an ex-

some romance, full of good teaching,
without cant, that It will be found mors
than acceptable to discriminating read-
era.
The story teltf of a small settlement,
supposedly located on the Connecticut
river. "Prophets Landing" Is a small
village, fltted mostly with Its usual
contracted people. Ono of the vll-

stands out head and shoulders above
his fellow men, and It Is about hla
business success, when he puls these
traits to a test around which fhe stoo

It Is the now old story of "depart-

There are, of course, both Innocent and
guilty victims In this captain's path
way lo auccass, and the book Is an ex-
position of the falsity of the theorv
that there Is nothing else in life save
financial success. A fascinating little
