SOUTHERN TRAIN
English, Ind., April it.—Four mneked
and heavily armad robbera attempted
at dawn today to a rob a faat passen
ger train on the Southern railroad near
here, W. E. Cummings was probably
fatally wounded. The highwaymen hod
stopped tbe train and were preparing
to go through the coaches when Mar
shal Cummlnga appeared with a posts
and opened lire on them. One bandit

broken yeeterday for the mercantile
of T. B. Faulk Jk Co, whoa#

fire ten days ago. The building will be
S0x100 feet, made of brick, with solid
plate glasa front, and adjoining the
building now being erected by E. G.
McCormick. Two lota have been bought

Provided by tho

The movement to secure summer
playgrounds for the school children was
started Thursday afternoon, when
committee from the Asaoclated Chari
ties appeared before the board of edu-'
cation at Its regular iponthly meeting
and outlined tha plana'proposed. Thin
committee waa composed of Secretary
J. C. Logan, pf the Associated Chari
ties, and V. II. Krlegahaber and G. H-
B random
Secretary Logan pointed out to the
board the good work accomplished last
year by the one playground established
and supported through voluntary con
trlbutlona and showed how those chtl
dren who had tha advantages of It were
far better prepared to lake up their
telsone In the fall. He also showed that
Investigations had proven that play la

a child as study, and that this play
should bs under the direction of a com
petent lnatrcutor.

ot St. Paul, Minn, arrived In this city
expecting to meet her sweetheart. Cap
tain Hons Thorton, but only to learn
that he was drowned th* day aha left
her western home.. He and three other
men In a naptha launch Tuesday
dashed over th* dam at Buckhom
Shoals, on th* Cape Fear river and
a loat. Telegrams ware sent th*
young woman but ah* did not recalve
them. Mlsa Llndgren la only 19
and a beautiful young woman.
Thoraon was foreman of a large
electric plant.
Tha bodies of the drowned men have
not been recovered.

Columbus, Ga., April 29.—John Bel
lamy, the young man who was shot and
seriously Injured by Frank Reed, an
other young man at the boarding house
of the latter Wednesday night. Is re
ported to b* In a dangerous condition
from bis wounds. Reed shot Bellamy
from a window of his boarding house
as the latter was standing on the aide-
walk.
Reed and Bellamy had a quart-el
about a ring which hod been raffled,
and Retd claimed that It was not
awarded to the right person.
Bellamy attacked Reed and tha latter
going to his boarding house, fired at
Bellamy, inflicting a serious wound.
