PROHIBITION EIGHT
ON IN BARTOW COUNTY
Special to The Georgian.
Cartersvllle, do., April 77.—A cam
paign for prohibition haa been actively
launched In Bartow county and the
light against the whisky Interests will
be brought on as soon as the petitions
that are now being circulated can be
returned to the ordinary of the county.
For more than twenty years the city
of Carteravllle and county of Bartow
hay* been In the “dry" columns of tho
Georgia counties and towns, although
by a decision of (he supreme court of
the state there Is no law against ths
sale of whisky In this county. The sen
timent of the people has been the only
barrier to open saloons, and during the
Itfe-tlme of Rev. 8am Jones that senti
ment was so strong and so pronounced
that few people thought It necessary to
secure a re-openlng of the question.
However, since th* recent decision ut
the court of appeal*, declaring the local
option law for Bartow county uncon
stitutional and the demise of the evan
gelist. t|ie prohibitionists have con
cluded that they will no longer depend
upon the unexpressed sentiment of the
people to keep liquor out of the county.
Judge A. YV. Fite, judge of th* Chero
kee circuit, and Hon. YV. J. Neel, rep
resentative from Bartow county, in the
coming general assembly, are both
working for the election.
W, F. BAKER FREE
OF ANY BLAME
Recently In reporting the decision of
the supreme court In the caae ot R. M.
Roe* Company against Bartow county.
Inadvertently an Injustice was done a
well-known and reputable citizen of
Carters trill*.
The statement was made that YV. F.
Baker, agent of the Southern Express
Company at Cartersvllle, had been con
victed In connection with the Rose case.
This was not true, as 5tr. Baker waa
not convicted. He ls considered one of
the most reputable and law-abiding clt-
liens of Cartersvllle, and The Georgian
cheerfully ’correct* the error, which
arose through an obscurity In the court
records.
