ITS VALUE TO THE STATE
Hon. Hooper Alexander, In an arti
cle ot length, advocates the extension
of the state road'to the sea—a posi
tion he has taken for years, and which
ho has advocated with great effoctlve-
nffks.
Mr. Alexander calls attention to the
plank In the Democratic platform of
last year In which the question of leas
ing the property, at the expiration of
the present lease, Is opposed, and call
ing upon the general assembly to In
vestigate fully the question of extend
ing the road to the sea.
Mr. Alexander shown that the gross
earning capacity of the Western and
Atlantic I* greater per mile than any
other railroad In the countiy. The
state road earns til-000 per mile, whllt
the general average for the entlr«
country Is only (9.000 per mile. He aayi
that mile for mile It Is the most valua.
ble railroad property in the South.
Ho says that In one respect at leas
the tenant Is a good tenant, and that
during the elxtcen years the leaao hut
run over' a million dollars has beet
spent in Improvements. He calls at
tention to failure to comply with ont
terra of tho lease—annual reports tc
the state of detailed statements of Im
provements.
Throughout the article the keynolt
Is "extension to the tea.” Mr. Alex
ander will probably press a bill with
tbat purpose In view at the coming ses
sion of the general assembly.
