passed a peaceful night and this morn
ing there was no Indication that the
rioting of yesterday would bo resumed
today. The threat of Chief Dlneen to
arm his police with rifles and shoot
the strike breakers seems to havo made
the men discord their firearms, or else
hide them In such a way as to give
no chance for the pollco to take ac
tion.
Although everything was quiet up to
10 a. in., both aides are engaged In bit
ter denunciation. The men accused at
killing James Walsh are held without

In a statement Issued by President
Patrick Calhoun today he says:

worthless, absolutely, now furnleh materials for building stones, and for
many other construction purposes.' Plants for the manufacture of brick
tiling and other clay products are being" established continually. Cement
. plants are growing. In number, as are woodworking establishments. The
manufacture of lumber Increases In volume In a degree that Is hardly to
be credited, and the demand for lumber Is Increasing. At Birmingham.
Ala., a company Hhs been formed to manufacture electrical devices; at
Florence. Ale., e company Is preparing, with a capital etock of 150,000, to
manufacture a machine which. It Is believed, ha* solved tho problem of re
moving lint from cotton seed; at Birmingham, Ala. a company will en-
gngelmthe manufacture of metal buckles for holding steel bands, as used
for ties on cotton bales; at Columbus, Go., Cullman, Ala, and Grovanla,
Ga, factories will be erected to manufacture fertilizers that will give
growth and productiveness to cotton and other crops."
