'DUFFIE LYNCHING WAS A FAKE STORY Sheriff A. W. Hawes, Of McDtittle county, denies moat emphatically the story sent out from Denting, McDuf fie county. Tuesday, that Charles Dar rin. a negro farm hand, had been lynched for the murder of a prominent white farmer, Haydeh Pearson. Sheriff Hawes wrote Governor Ter- ell that Pearson was not killed, and while seriously Injured, will probably recover. He says that the negro wna not lynched, but that according to re port! he was whipped In Columbia county. No effort was made to run the negro's family away. Special to The Georgian. Canon, Ga., May JO.—'IV. M. Moore, better known as “Uncle BUlIe.” com mitted suicide yesterday by drowning. He left his home at about 0:30 o’clock, walked about two and a half miles to the creek* near Duncans Mill*, took pff his coat and vest on the bank of a lake near the creek, tied his hands to gether with a piece of hickory bark and Jumped Into the water. His body was recovered about 3 o'clock. He had been superintendent of the Sunday school for n number of years, and hod led n consistent life since boyhood. He was a member of the Baptist church of thlB place. He leaves a wife and two sons, O. U Moore, who holds a. responsible position with the Seaboard road at Athen*. and Berry Moore, of Atlanta. Mr. Moore had been In very feeble health for several weeks. HUNDREDS WITNESS STRUGGLE FOB LIFE US CADET OHOWNS Special to The Georgian. Charleston, S. C„ May 10.—Cadet W. J. Jackson, of Wlnnsboro. a member of tho fourth-class South Carolina Mili tary Academy,' waa' drowned late yes terday afternoon off the Isle of Palms while ewtmmlng beyond his depth. The cadets were holding their annual picnic and the drowning occurred In eight of hundreds of young people. The body of the cadet waa found late, last night on the beach. . Denver, Omaha and Milwaukee In the West, granted franchises, while Bos ton and Providence stand out os the leading Eastern cities giving the new system admittance. Delegates to the convention will hear reports that the independent telephone organisations, now practically control the Pacific slope and all the principal cities of Oregon and Washington have adopted the new system within the last few months. Under predbnt regulations the rate on cotton, whethor compressed or not. Is practically the same. President Jordan thinks compressed cotton Is entitled to a lower rating. 'Quake in 8iberia.
