Skating, without a doubt, will be the
most popular form of amusement
among Atlanta’s pleasure lovers this
summer.'
The enjoyment derived from watch
ing the graceful couple* In their bil
lowy curves over the glass-llke floor
waltzing and two-ztepplng In perfect
time to the exhilarating music. Is only „„ |UL
excelled by the pleasure of being one or beginner becomes a ekater
the skaters.
Restlzlng that there are hundreds In
Atlanta who would like to skate, but
who have never learned for fear that
It Is difficult to master and sure to
cause fall*. The Georgian has prepared
the following Instructions for begin
ners. These points were gained from
an expert skating instructor, and be
declares that anyone who follows them
will be sure to skate and need have no
fear of falling, even once: '
Reduced to IU simplest form, roller
Skating la a series or succession of rolls
on one foot at a time. It Is opposed to
walking In that (when done properly)
the entire distance traveled (called the
■stroke") Is covered by the roll and not
a step. What the Wsglnner must learn
la to put the foot down In sxactly the
right place, which Is the center of grav
ity located directly under the shoulder
on the side of the body the foot Is on.
Ae lobg as the foot Is directly under
the body It retains Its relative position,
whether the wheel, ere moving or not.
But—Just so soon as the foot le placed
In the slightest advance of the body the
weight of the skater shoves the skate
etlll further forward and a fall la the
Instantaneous result.
Now. as to the first step In learning
to skate.
While holding with both hands on to
something firm and strong enough to
brace you, lift one foot at a time, bend
ing the knee sharply so that tho foot
comes straight up, at the same time
falsing the shoulder on that side: then
reverse the motion, putting the foot
straight down so that all the wheels
will strike the floor at the same’time
and In the same place that they were;
repeating the motion with the other
i foot. It Is very Important the foot be
raised and, lowered In a straight line
and thnt the wheels not be allowed to
roll after touching the floor.
This must be kept up'until the skat
ing pupil can do so with ease and with
out holding on to anything. Fifteen or
twenty minutes will generally suffice If
kept at regularlj- and conscientiously.
The next step Is to learn to walk on
skates, always remembering that the
foot must bo kept directly under the
body and never placed In advance. The
proper length of a step Is half of the
length of the skater's foot, the heel of
one foot being placed always on a line
with 1 Die hollow ot the tooL The cen
ter of the floor is the beat place to do
this, and self-confldence Is established
very quickly by walking alone. If the
skater has learned well to raise and
lower the feet'there will be no difficulty
In walking alone.
The next step Is the "srtoke," which
Is the last point to learn before the
'nner becomes a ekater, To make
iut down one foot exactly as when
walking, heel on line with Instep of
other foot, toes turned out. At tho
same time lift the other foot and gently
sway the body slightly forward and to
that lids. This sway furnishes all of
the necessary momentum for the
"stroke."
It Is not only unnecessary, but dan
gerous, to thrust forward tho foot you
are putting your weight on. or to push
with the foot leaving the floor es la
done In the ease of Ice skating. When
the momentum gives .m repeat the
same motions with tho other foot, sway.
Ing the body to that side, always re
membering to put each foot down un
der the corresponding shoulder. When
this Is .done tho beginner Is skating.
Practice la the only thing which then
differentiates the beglnnor who has
mastered these Instructions, from the
expert. Hundreds have learned thlB
gentle art In Atlanta, many skating
within the first hour. Slow and easy Is
the slogan. "The slower you go the
faster you learn” sounds paradoxical,
but Is a fact. Atlanta Is fortunate In
having In the St. Nicholas auditorium
at Ponce DeLeon park the most mag
nificent skating rink In America. Con
current with the opening of the Ponce
DeLeon park. Wednesday night a fancy
dress carnival at the rink will be given.
Many of the city's moat expert and
be among the spectators to
enjoy the rare scene. An automatic
band, Imported from. Paris at a cost of
37,500 francs. Is now being Installed and
will be in operation In a few days. Aft

Clothing F o r Y ou n g M e n
The most critical observers of clothes are
young men.
And fashion, the very creator of the new,
invariably looks to the yoiingster for his
approval.
Modern ideas in clothes building, like mod
ern ideas in everything, have so far advanced
the science of clothes construction that the
chap who has depended on his tailor hereto
fore prefer^ to see the goods in the suit rather
than in the piece.
Our models originate in the smartest shop
on Fifth avenue, and the fabrics are, for the
most part, brought over from the other side
for American tailors.
The novelties we show you are exclusive,
—you won’t see them elsewhere,—and you
won’t see the models duplicated in any other
store. Even the staple fabrics, like serges and
worsteds, are so different in construction
that they’re noticeable at a glance. Every
coat hassilk sleeves, many of them silk lined,
and every garment before leaving our charge
is critically inspected, for details.
We should be delighted to have you see
the line, and we promise you now that you
won’t be urged to buy.
The clothing department is located on the
second floor, where you are afforded abund
ant light and the ease and quiet of a drawing
room. Suits, ready-to-wear,
