OLD BATTLEFIELD RESOUNDS WITH THE CRACK OF RIFLES The cadeta of Georgia Military Acad emy engaged In a sham battle at Col lege Park Wednesday afternoon. The battlefield waa In the wood*, south west of the academy, where a little more then forty yeara ago many of the fathere of theae cadeta were aoldlere In the Confederacy and met the armlee of the North, "A" company, commanded by Captain TV. Clayton Xing and Lieutenants Haughton and Merrfn, took a poaltlon on the hill beetween the cemetery and College Park. The line waa eo ex tended that It looked almoat Impossible for an opposing force to make a auc- reaaful attack. In thla poaltlon "A” company waited the attack from com panies "B" and “C,” commanded re spectively by Captain -B. E. Willing ham and Captain R C. Gresham. Captain Willingham left the acade my grounds and moved to the left, while Captain Gresham took hla com pany to the extreme right. The first Indication that the battle would soon take place waa the firing between the sentinels of Companies "A" and "B,” on, the left. Lieutenant Merrln abandoned hla poaltlon at the top of the hill and moved hla platoon toward the west when he encountered the left, wing of Captain Willingham’s company and an Interesting skirmish took place. Cap tain King was making a splendid de fense and holding Captain Willingham s forces In check. Ih the meantime. Cap. tain Gresham and Lieutenant J. B. Buttles had succeeded In gaining a splendid position to the extreme right and, upon reaching the brow of the opposite hill, opened a terrific fire upon the right of the enemy, and nishlng his command Across the field In douDie** quick time. Joined Captain Willingham. The charge made by Captain Gresham was a splendid one, the cadeta keeping an unbroken line. The real battle was now on In earnest, and for more than thirty minutes the opposing forces eon- tended for supremacy. The cadets lought like veterans and the volleys from their rifles filled the woods and hills with a continuous roar. The battle was planned by Major R. A.
