Rome, Ga., May 23.—It required a
second Indictment by the Federal grand
Jury before United States District At
torney F. Carter Tate could place
George F. Hurt, a well-known At
lantan, on trial here today In the Fed
eral court for peonage. Yesterday the
Indictments against Mr. Hurt, a« man
ager of the Georgia Iron and Coal Com
pany; J. T. Price and H. K. Lamb,
were dismissed on *a demurrer by An
derson, Felder. Rountree A Wilson,
attorneys for the defendants, and the
district attorney had to get another in
dictment from the grand Jury.
The government has a rriass of evi
dence to Introduce, and It.Is doubtful If
the trial Js finished today.

Savannah, Oa., May JJ.—The most
serious part of the bloody tragedy at
Reldsvllla Monday of the negroes was
brought to light by ihe confession made
by Padgett's wife that she finished kill
ing John Hare, who had only been
wounded, when the members of tho
poaae left him for dead. There Is all
sorts of reports being circulated In re-
gnrd to the affair there.
A nice purse was raised by people of
the neighborhood for Mr*. Hare, widow
of tho man killed.

the charge of abduction. The youths
