Major General A* J. West, com
mander of the Georiria division of the
ITnlted Confederate Veterans, returned
Tuesday from Richmond, where he at
tended the annual reunion of the vet
eran# of the gray.
General West states that the trip to
the former capital of the Confederate
states was a most pleasant one end the
reunion of the veterans one long to be
remembered.
"Thn reunion at Richmond was more
largely attended than any In recent
years/' said General West. "The fact
that we met In Richmond, a place
which Is dear to tho hearts of all Con
federate soldiers. Induced many of
them to atterfd who would probably not
have been present had we met else
where. The old soldiers came In great
crowde from all sections of tho country
and they had a moat delightful time."
When asked about the published re
port that while In Richmond he and
Major McMahon, of Athens, and Com
mander Callahan, of Washington, had
offered a negro man $15,000 to reveal
tho hiding place of the Great Beal of
the Confederacy, General West said:
"I knew nothing of that alleged offer
until I saw It In the papers. It was re
potted that a negro named Will Jones,
who claimed to be a former servant of
President Davis, was In Richmond and
stated that he knew whero thq seal was
and that these other gentlemen and
myself offered him $15,000 to produce It.
"No such event took place, and If
there was any negro In Richmond who
knew, or claimed to know, the hiding
place of tho Great Beal of the Confed
eracy I did not hear of him.
"It has been well advertised, though,'
continued General West. "Hero Is a
letter from a party In Birmingham, who'
signs himself, or herself, as 'Lock
Box 61.'
"This party offers to make the negro
produce the seal provided I will pay
tlm the reward. Fortune teller, I guess,"
remarked General West, ns he tossed
tho letter aside. "The negro who has
the seal hasn't heon found yet."

UNION DEPOT SHED
A north Georgia horse performed a
stunt Tuesdny afternoon beside which
the most boasted performances of the
south Georgia mules must In compari
son sink Into the dimmest of obscurity.
The runaway may not have occurred
Just oa It was described to a represen
tative of The Georgian, but one of the
fairest of tho fair did the describing,
and, making allowances for what she
Imagined during her disturbed state. It
happened somewhat like this:
A grocery wagon waa being driven
up Central avenue by a negro, when tho
horse became frightened. As Is tne pe
culiar custom and habit of horses when
frightened, this one ran away, only It
ran faster than moat runaway horses.
Straight up Central avenue the flery
steed sped, the negro driver disappear
ing between Hunter and Alabama
streets. How the driver got out of tho
wagon, and where he went, nre details
that have not been accounted for.
Arriving at the old depot, the horse
ran straight Into the Inhospitable arms
of a fast passenger train that wits run
ning nt full speed out of the shed, thus
breaking tho city regulation governing
speed ot trains In the city limits.
The horse was traveling nt break
neck speed. The train was doing the
same. It was a ease of an Irresisti
ble force, the horse meeting a moving
Immovable body. And thus the mys
tery of ages was explained.
The train moved on In the even
tenor of Its way. The horse turned
to the left and calmly sped through
the car shed from Central avenue,
making an exit on Pryor street.
