BEFORE COUNCIL
The city council meet* at 3 o'clock
Thuraday afternoon for the purpoae of
conducting an Investigation of the
charges brought against Thomas F.
Stocks, water commissioner.'
At the meeting Monday council
adopted a resolution to the effect that
the entire body, as a committee of the
whole, make the investigation, and a
special meeting was called for 3 o'clock
Thursday afternoon for this purpose.
Commissioner Stocks is represented
by Attorney Reuben Arnold.
NE HAS APPLIED
FDR POLICE PLACE
Although the civil tervlee examination for
the newly created office of aaatstant chief
of police la only a few daya off—June 17—no
applications hare yet been filed by aspiring
candidates.
Among those mentioned are James A. Pat
terson. secretary to Chief Jennings; Cap
tain Jett of the evening* watch. Captain
Heavers of th® morning watch, Station 8er
mint Mnyo, former Station Sergeant Man
ley. Patrolman Paul Hubbard and J. M.
Nye, former Rertfllon expert at the United
States penitentiary.
The name of Probation Officer Gloer has
also been mentioned In connection with the
office, but It is understood Thursday he will
not be a candidate.
Under the civil service rides members of
the police force uppl.vlng for the office will
have to pass a mental examination only.
Outsiders will be required to pass both a
mental and physical examination.

Croker Snubbed

Even rnyalty showed disapproval, for
Croker was not Invited to King Ed
ward's Derby dinner, It being rumored
that the "Boss” was considered “un
desirable.’’ Instead of eating the king':
dinner, as Is customary with Derby
winners, Croker dined with nls wife,
from wnom he has been estranged fpr
many years.
Revival Services.
Revival services are being held at
the Temple Baptist church, corner
Mangum and Hunter streets, all this
week. Service starts at 7:45 o'clock
sharp. The meeting Is being held un
der the auspices of the Baraca class.

GIRL'S BODY FOUND
IN HARLEM RIVER
New York, June 6.—What the police
believe might develop Into a murder
myetery confronted them today when
they found In the Harlem river the
body of a beautiful girl of about IS
years.
There was nothing about the girl to
disclose her Identity. She was 5 feet 5
lncK?s-fh height and of slender build,
weighing only 100 pounds. At llret the
police thought the girl resembled de
scriptions of Florctta Whaley, who
eloped with the Rev. Jere Knode
Cooke, but a closer examination con.
vinced them that It was not her body.
SCHMITZ DEALT BLOW
BY SUPREME COURT
San Francisco, June S.—That Mayor
Eugene E. Schmitz has been dealt a
severe blow by the supreme court of
this state la the declaration of attorneys
of this city, who have just received
copies of the decision In the appealed
case of ttj* People against Amer.
This decision deprives the defendant
in a criminal case of the right of ap
peal for a new trial on the grounds of
misconduct on the part of the district
attorney, a right which haa been long
exercised by the superior courts of Cal
ifornia.
BROKEHIS PLEDGE;
TO SERVE TERM
For falling to keep his pledge not to
drink liquor again, William Boggs, who
lives In Chestnut street, was Thurs
day morning sentenced .by Acting Re
corder Taylor to serve tea days In the
stockade without a line.
Boggs was arraigned a short time
ago before Recorder Broyles on the
charge of drunkenness, and took the
pledge. When he was brought before
the bar of justice Thursday the acting
recorder was acquainted with this fact,
and promptly gave the man a stockade
term.

Macon, Qa., June 6.—Alderman J. B.
Melton was this morning found not
guilty of the charge of gaming that was
returned against him by the grand Jury.
Several witnesses were placed on the
stand In the city court to testify In the
Melton case, but nono of them could
swear that Melton had been playing
any game when the raid was made.
In all there were fourteen gaming
cases disposed of In the city court this
morning, all the men being found not
guilty of the charge against them.

Toledo, Ohio, June 6.—A petition op
posing the confirmation of the sale of
the Toledo Railways and Terminal
Company was filed In the United States
circuit court yesterday by the Ohio

Walsh, says that she was given 33,000

his lawyers, Nlroll, Anable & Lindsay,
and Ignorantly signed a letter dismiss
ing Hansen ns her attorney. Subse
quently she received two sums of 13,000
each and haa been getting betides from
$200 to $400 a month.

that a committee representing the
bondholders bought the road at the set
price of $2,000,000.
It further charges that the creditors
