“Soldier* of Fortune.”
Several ecrewa become looee and the
bottom fell out of the George Fawcett
Stock Company Uonday night, when
that excellent company attempted a
presentation of Richard Harding Davis'
“Soldier* of Fortune."
If live playwright* turn over aa dead
one* ara aald to when their play* are
butchered. “Dickie" Davta must have
spun like a top Monday night. The
wholeaole butchery and alaughter of
llnea waa something awful.
“Asleep at the switch." Thla seems
to cover It. First, the stage manager
and prompter. Then the company. Then
the audience.
The audlonre waa a large ono and
deserved better. The gun that should
have done the shooting snapped and
snapped Instead; the door that should
have opened went on a tear and tore;
one or two of tha company forgot their
lines, thalr places, and their existence;
and the climax of the play, which was
scheduled to be a revolution, turned
into a riot.
The Fawcett Company has made
many friends and admirers In Atlanta
by the aplendld presentation of more
difficult playa than "The Soldiers of
Fortune," and the flrst-nlghters will
forgive, even If they can not forget, this
first disappointment.
The work of Miss Phyllis Sherwood,
Regan Hughston. Jane Wheatley, De
witt C. Jennings, Charles Inslee nnd
Brandon Hurst was all that could have
been expected, considering.
Despite the Inelement and threaten
ing weather, an audience of rather large
proportions assembled at the Casino
Mondny night to witness the inltlul
performance of thla week's bill, "Stran
ger In Town." As a mirth provoker,
the play measures up to the average,
and at times tha humorous situations
compel unrestrained and uproarious
laughter.
Frank Beamish, as Bartley Swift, tha
man who has been In love with a worn,
an In Toklo, and who has since mar
ried a very Jealous wife, is the center
of attraction, nnd the sor|o-comlc sit
uations which arise when love No. 1
comes upon the acene with a batch of,
old love letters appeals to all alike, and
the result Is unmitigated fun from
•tart to finish.
Miss Rita Knight tnkes the part of
the lady from Toklo and Is gifted with
unusual skill and cleverness In the ex
ecution of her role.
"Why Can't a Girl Be a Soldier*
“Such Is Married Life," and "If Wash

The company of vaudeville stars had
their first try out Monday afternoon

That state prohibition would knock

situation.
If that prohibition bill goes through,"
remarked a prominent member of the
committee of ten Tuesday, "I see no

city limits. Cut off more than 3300,000
of the city's annual Income and exten
sion will be Impossible.”
In council Monday afternoon, while
little wnn said of the two questions In
connection, the realization that city ex
tension may be dependent upon the de
feat of the prohibition bill seemod to
have struck home.
When city extension came up. earn*
discussion arose aa to whether coun

purpose of taking action. Councilman

It was decided to meet Friday after
noon at 3 o'clock, and oa It was thought
the prohibition bill might ba settled by
then. This Is hardly probable, how
ever, aa the bill has not yet beon re
ferred to committees In either house,
and members think tha question will
not coma to a vote for some time.
Mayor Joyner, In a special message
to council, spoke of the hard work of
tha committee of forty-two and urged
that It waa to the beat Interests of the

adopted.
