New Orleans. July 3.—The Tlmes-Demo-
cratf “Yesterday’s cotton crop condition of
72 fiat, as promulgated by the government,
^av# shorts heart failure, for It confirmed
.ho worst professional fears. The fact that
a total Improvement of only 1.5 waa record
ed for the period from May IS to June 25
waa not all-convincing to the average
trader, whoae attention haa been held by
tho obviously seasonable character of tha
weather subsequent to June 3, and the bo-
however, may prove aomewL...
whan it Is remembered that last month's
report was made up to May 25, that follow-
jat period must har# tacn exten
sive, consequently from tho condition of
70.5 from Mny 25 the plant lost ground un
til early !u June, after which there was
sufficient Improvement to pull the iielt tip
to 72 by June 25. Th# fact should never
be overlooked that percentage condition

iiom this morning wns thut the market, waa
lu for u mure or iesa Important reaction.
It wna felt that the array of unfavornlde
developments In yesterday’s altuation, clili f
of which were the low cotton condition nml
the renewal of gold exports, ware alto
gether too formidable to be withstood, espe
cially after the sharp rise of the past 'week
lu security prices. The market did go gen
erally lower nt the outset following un un
settled condition in the dealings nfcroud.
But nt a recession of % point or so from
yesterday's closing heavy buying ordora
made their appearnne*. in numerous direc
tions, and not only ware the offerings at the
low figures quickly taken, but prices wore
bid up sharply all through the list. The re
covery wns helped In no small measure by
the publication of the sub-treasury figures,
showing that the banks had gained ou tbo
week nearly 83,000,000. This served to effect
disappointment in speculative circles, which
wero aroused by the resumption of gold en
gagements and the persistence of high, rates
for sterling exchange in the .face of high
money.
New York, July 3.—There wns a fairly ac
tive openiug to the stock market today, ami
the number of Issues denlt In presented con
siderable variety. Brices opend unsteady
nnd almoet immediately began to sell off-
owing to the unexpected renewal of gold
exports and rnmors of fresh activity of
anti-corporation news from Washington.
The selling pressure after the first ten
minutes of trading abated somewhat, but
tho tone of the speculation remalued heavy.
