Atlanta atlrred uneasily In her sleep Monday night, toaslng and turning to find a cooler spot, gasping for a breath of air, awcarlng at the sweltering at- moaphere. But It waa of no uae. Un less one had a cottage in the suburban hills or an electric fen close to the bedside, there wa* no relief from the scourge of torrid temperature which wrapped the city. In the home* of the rich there waa discomfort, but In the slums where the poor are crowded Into tenement rooms It amounted to torture. All night long women and children, many of them awakened by sickness, tossed despair ingly In hall room*, where no breath of fresh air penetrated, moaning piteously at the heat and drinking freely of the lukewarm fluid, half watrr. half mud. which came from the pipes. The Ice wagons kept up their rounds until late In the night, and for those who could pay there was a momentary relief. Many gave willingly the price of Tues day’* breakfast for on hour's coolness Monday night, while hundreds heard the rip of the saw through the block of crystal comfort with no chance of gaining a taste. Hundred* took the fresh sir treat ment Monday night. Down In Decatur street and all through the tenement die. trlct the lire escapes were filled with Improvised cote, and men, women and children In scanty raiment stole what slumber they could under the stars, creeping back Into their stifling rooms when the breeze at dawn gave promt** , slight relief. ut the open elr sleep wa* not con fined to the poor. Many a man In tbe reridence district swore at the heat until sleep waa frightened A»ay. and then took a blanket and moved to the hammock on the porch. Out In Capi tol avenue a policeman on the morn ing watch awoke a slumbering citizen shortly after dawn and advised him to more from the hammock on the front lawn Into the house, or else replace his filmy pajamas with something less di aphanous before the early risers began their downtown Journey peat hts gate. Those who had roar verandas protect ed from the public gaze were fortunate, and more than one bed was moved to these before midnight. "Lots of people stayed up and out doors all night," said the policeman. "Some wefe In the parka until mlgbty late, and a lot of 'em found a hiding place In the grass and slept there until daybreak. There were a lot sitting out In front of the stores and doxlng In their chairs who never went to real sleep at alL" No records were broken during tha night. The thermometer at the weath er bureau showed that Atlanta has known hotter nights. But the thermom eter Is sometimes deceptive. It was the deathtly stillness of the air, the sticky, nasty heat that clrovo one alter nately to the water cooler and profani ty, that did the work. And Atlanta hope* thot she will never know an other night like thnt. 0000000000OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO O O O IN DEPOT WAITING ROOM O O 8TORK MAKE8 A VISIT.
