Weather conditions have improved crops ' wohderfully in the ‘ last twd weeks, according to reports to mer cantile agencies, and stimulated retail and jobbing lines. The ease In call money yesterday was favorably commented upon and a better bank statement than generally looked for In the early part of the week Is now thought to be more than probable. The hanks have gained heav ily from the Interior, counteracting the drain to the sub-treasury. A harden Ing. of prices can be reasonably ex pected, and should the statement be fairly good, a further hardening Is like ly. The main factor, of course. Is the Harrlman case, which will be made Town Topics: The strength dis played by such stocks as the Hill is sues, Southern and Canadian Pacific, Baltimore and Ohio and Louisville and Nashville, is due in some degree to the belated demand of outside Investors. This demand, while of moderate vol ume, is sufficient, In view of the scarci ty of the stocks mentioned, to bring about gradual improvement in theii price. Foreign money markets are more favorably conditioned, and the manner in which European holders of Atchison have subscribed to the bonds encour ages the hope that foreigners will be fore long show more anxiety to take advantage it the opportunity offered in this market. Crops are coming along nil right, copper metal Is in fair demand nt the reduced prices, railroad earn ings and general business are keeping up, while the government anti-trust activities have been entirely discount ed. Lemons are showing a steady tone, and a continuation of the hot weather will, no doubt, result In more or less advance In the near future. Bananas plentiful and selling nt low er prices than at any time during the seasqn. Irish potatoes cleaning up to some extent, with the market showing signs of reaction as to demand and values. A strong demand prevails for new crop sweet potatoes, with receipts short of requirements. Vegetables, generally, are plentiful and cheap, being supplied the retail grocer by the trucker direct. A fair demand and values for onions of good size and well cured. Cooking butter plentiful with a low ronge of values prevailing. The best grades of table butter selling at good prices. Small and medium fries plentiful and are receiving hut little consideration at the hands of the buyers, even ut less values In proportion than for large sizes, which are selling at good values. Livo hens meeting ready sale at prices quoted. A fair demand only exists for dressed poultry, especially hens and turkeys. Dressed ducks and geese of quality, scarce and active. No change of note applies to the egg situation, as receipts are sufficient to meet all requirements, with values suf ficiently low to causo u general and lib eral consumption. Stocks Opened at Sharp Fractional Gains in a Few Issues. BANK! EXHIBIT GOOD Imparted Strength to Later Trading and Market Continued Upward. New York, July 13.—Today’s market, in almost every detail, reproduced tha movement of last Saturday's prices and opened at a slight gain over last ! night’s figures. The market then rose steadily and In the last half hour even 1 rapidly, recording at the close of the day some very substantial advances. The motives behind this advance were twofold. In the first place, the bank statement showed a gain in sur- . plus reserve of $6,000,000, \yhlch was aa much at variance with the apparent ! cash charges as the surplus decrease a ; week ago. In the second place, the t conviction grew strong that the report . on the Harrlman Investigation which la to he given out tomorrow, would contain nothing to offend Wall street j sensibilities. The buying movement j converged, therefore, upon the Harrl- mnn Issues, but the rest of the active list was almost equally fltrong, and the ! whole proceedings emphasised the sold- j out condition of the market. There la little to be said of the hank figures ex cept that the $4,000,000 cash Increase more than made un for last week's er rors of under-statement, while the $10,- 80(),ooo loan decrease reflected the fa miliar shifting of creditors.
