NELBONOMASON.
Special to The Georgian.
To the Editor of The Georgian:
As your readers are familiar with
the prohibition leaders, such men as
Seaborn Wright, Judge Covington,
Messrs. Hardman, Neel, Dr. J. C. Solo
mon, Solicitor Mayson, Mr. W. D. Up
shaw, Mr. Richards, Mr. Fred L. Seely,
Hon. John Temple Graves, Rev. Sam
Jones, Dr. Broughton, Mr. Gillette and
many other, enthusiastic workers, In
cluding all the patriotic members of
the Georgia senate and lower house,
who fought In the good cause. It would
not be amiss to say something of the
noble women of the Georgia Woman’s
Chrlstlap Temperance Union, who for
many years have stood for God and
home and native land.
1 read In The Georgian of tho 30th a
congratulatory telegram from Mrs. W.
C. Sibley, of Birmingham, Ala., former
president of the Georgia W. C. T. U.
Like myself, n native of Augusta, Oa„
where she resided until the recent death
of her husband, when she moved to
Birmingham, to be near her sons. For
twenty years she was active president
of the temperance work In Georgia.
Every week as regularly as clock work
she wnuld leave her handsome home to
lend the temperance prayer meeting.
Iped out of the atate and city she
so much loved.
Prohibition has never been a popular
movement In Augusta, nnd when It was
defeated In the state election, I recall
how mournfully the church bells tolled
while Mrs. Sibley and her few faithful
nnd devoted women followers served
lunches at the polls and In St. Johns
Methodist church, praying ns never
before. Only a fetv of the ministers at
thnt time were working with us: there
were several, however, who stood nobly
for temperance. Among the women
on that occasion In the Augusta union
I remember Mrs. W. C. Sibley, Mrs. J.
Jefferson Thomas, Mrs. Henry Russell,
Mrs. Bailie Lou Dlbrell. Miss Nodle
Russell, Mrs. Leila Raines Smythe, Mrs.
George Wilcox. Mrs. Katie C. Rood,
Mrs. George Sibley, Mrs. Hunter, Miss
Missouri Stokes, Miss Stoy, Mrs. Pal
mer, Mrs. Julia C. Scales, Mrs. Clai
borne Snead, Mrs. Joe williams, Mrs.
Fred L. Ingraham, Mrs. Whitehead,
Mrs. Frank Kimbrough, Mrs. Judge
Eve, Miss McLaws, Mrs. Lon Jackson,
Mrs. Helen Bush. Mrs. Dr. McGinnis,
Mrs. Nixon, Mrs. Sam Sibley and others
who have continued faithfuj; not' a
large following for the site of Augusta,
but for faithful and undnunted courage
they are as renowned as the knights of
the round table. Idealizing and loving
their noble Christian leader, Mrs. Sib
ley.
As the years passed nnd we saw the
sliver threads among the gold, we con
tinued to hope and pray, and when
time crowned her sweet face with an
aureola nf whiteness we glorified her
the more. A recognised leader of so
ciety, with wealth, beauty and Intellect,
foremost In every good work for the
city, charitable In the truest sense anil
friend to rich and poor nllke, working
In perfect accord with her devotod hus.
band, she would let nothing Interfere
with her weekly prayer meetings for
temperance. Often discouraged by the
apparent lack of Interest on the part nf
the people, she never faltered, and now
, The mar I hundreds rise to bless her good deeds.
Jacksonville. 1-la., Aug. 3-Themar- ,, wn „ at her hospitable home that
rlage of Mias Georgia Nelson and Mr. 1
Frances Willard, Mrs. Ann Stevens nnd
all the temperance workers were en
tertalned whenever they visited Au
gusto.
Several years ago she resigned her
position and her sister-in-law, Mrs.
Jennie Hart Sibley, of Union Point,
Ga., was elected to nil her place. An
other excellent woman who has nobly
done her duty, an indefatigable tem
perance worker at home and abroad,
for she was elected as delegate to the
International convention and appeared
before the crowned heads of Europe
and has traveled all over the United
States, speaking nnd writing In the
Interest of temperance. She has la
bored unceasingly, until her physl
clans advised her to take a rest. She
has appeared before large audiences
and has spoken In the legislature. She
also Is a handsome, white-haired,
graceful woman, of distinguished line
age, who resided many years In Au
gusto, Ga. She Is now honorary pres!
dent of the Georgia Woman's Chris
ttan Temperance Union, and has been
In Atlanta a constant attendant at the
capital during recent legislation. She
returned to her home In Union Point
when visitors were denied the gallery.
There haa been no more faithful work
er In the atate than Mrs. Jennie Hart
Sibley.
\ Every one In the United States—for
the Associated Press travels rapidly—
recognizes the name of Mary Harris
Armor, tho present president of the
Woman's Christian Temperance Union
of Georgia, for, like a cyclone, Mrs,
Mary Harris Armor speaks In an elo
quent, rapid, penetrating voice, for
she Is perfectly aware that she knows
what she is talking about, nnd she feels
that It Is a debt she owes the dead to
do alt In her power to protect the
Innocent from the evil effects of Intox
icants. It was my good fortune to
listen to her ns she made her nmgnlfl-
cent, earnest appeal before the mem-
hers of the lower house In .the legl*
lature and upon several other occa
slons, when she voiced the sentiments
of hundreds of women who watched her
radiant face and realized her power
for good. We are proud of this leader
also, and appreciate the good fight aha
hns made. All of these women are
good wives nnd mothers.
One more name, and I am done,
speak of our own beloved local presi
dent of Atlanta. Mrs. Mary L. McLen
don. of the Atlanta Willard Woman's
Christian Temperance Union, who for
many, many years has 'worked arid
prayed for the cause of"temperance:
Like Mrs. W. C. Sibley, her followers
have beeij few but faithful, several of
the Augusta union making their homeg
In Atlanta Joining her, among the lat
ter being Mrs. Jane Adkins, recording
secretary, and Mrs. Fred L. Ingra

anondence.
Mrs. McLendon Is greatly loved by
every memhit- of the union, an'
energy Is Indefatigable. A mau
personality and charm of manner she
possesses. She Is also a fluent, ver
satile writer for tho press. Through
the long, tiresome hours at the capitol
she stood serving lunches to the no
ble men who were destined to mnke
Georgia dry, and now she Is one of
the happiest women In Georgia.
MRS. FRED L. INGRAHAM,
Press Superintendent Atlanta Willard

George Mason, owner and manager of
the Everett Hotel here, which took
place at Seabreese, Fla., on Monday
last, caused quite a sensation among
their friends. The young couple hnd
met for the flrst time at the Continen
tal Hotel, Atlantic Beach, on June 30,
and the romantic haste of the courtship
and marriage are of general Interest.
Miss Mason has a rare spiritual type nf
beauty and a lovely, highly cultivated
soprano voice, and was the leading so
loist last winter In the Church of the
Good Shepherd.
