BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES.
WANTED—12$ ORDER TO SHOW THE
absurdity and ridiculousness of a certain
proposition, published In these columns by
it school teaching the Graham system of
shorthand, and to expose the attempt of
said school to confuse and mislead the pub
lic, Bagwell Business College, which has
the exclusive right to teach the famous
Chartler system of shorthand, makes the
following counter-proposition:
Bagyrell Business College, 198 Peachtree
street, Atlsnta, will enter Into a written
contract to pay to any business college
teaching an old system of shorthsnd $40 for
each of Its students aud $10 to each of said
students wno can, at the end of six, eight
or ten months, write shorthand at the rifte
of 76 words per minute in new matter,
newspapers and business letters for twen
ty consecutive minutes, and transcribe the
same on the typewriter at the rate of
twenty words a minute—forty to sixty
words on the typewriter and one hundred
words In shorthand l>elng the sffeed of the
average stenographer—If the anh! achool
will, for each of Its students who fall, do
nate $25 (half Bagwell's amount) to a char
itable Institution In Atlanta, to be named
shorthand stndents who enroll w
that time and study shorthand six, eight or
ten months, or accept positions lu less
The above proposition Is exactly the same
as that tnnda by the advocate of the old
system, and Intended for Bagwell Busi
ness College, with the exception that we
give them ten months to accomplish what
they ask us to do In ten weeks. The ab
surdity of the whole thing lies In the fact
that the student la required to write 1.600
can perfoi u. A student who conk
could easl’.- write 135 to 150 words a min
ute, wrltln* from one to five minutes. The
most rigid sborthnnd test given by the civil
service and tn the great national shorthand
contests neTer extend over five to ten uiln;
utes.
Bagwell Business College has bn1 a stand
ing challenge during the past year to con
test publicly a six weeks' student of the
C’hnrtler system against n thteo months'
student of any old system, of a three
