The registration for the public schools this fall has passed tho 1,300 mark, and the Indications are that It will be more than 3,000 before the door* of all the schools, Including the two high echoola, are thruwn open on Monday, September 9. Only those who arc transferred from one school to another because of change ot rosldence address, or those who are changed because of the re- districting ot schools by th* board, the pupils who went to school and dropped out before the dosing of th* lost term, and puplle who have never been In school before, are required to regls- ter. Those who Anlahed the last term and were promoted need not register. Of those registering, more than one- half, It la estimated, will be new pu pils. This means that the number of new pupils for next year will be more than 1,508. Professor L. M. Landrum, assistant superintendent, eays there will necessarily be some crowding, but that all will be well taken care of. In order to obviate th* necessity of compelling women to testify In open court In cases of criminal assault or attempted assault. Representative Flanders, of Johnson, has prepared a bill which he will Introduce ln^ the house Saturday. The bill provides that during the trial of an assault case, In Milch the woman who I* alleged to have been assaulted Is a witness, tht Judge of the court In which the case Is being tried shall be empowered to take the deposition of the witness at any time and place he may be deem beat. The deposition may be taken by the Judge, the clerk of the court, or by any per son authorized to take deposition*. The Judge Is required to be present at the taking of the deposition to rule upon all questions ot evidence and th* attorneys for both tbe state and th* defense are allowed the right to question the witness Just as If the tes timony were being tsken In open court. No other persons are allowod to be present at the taking of the deposition except expressly permitted by the Judge to be present. Tne bill further provides that the testimony thus taken shall be read to the Jury during the trial of the case and shall have th* same force and ef fect as If It were gjven from the wit ness stand. The bill la modeled after the Virginia law In regard to the same matter. It has been tried In that state and Is said have-glven satisfaction In the trial ot cases of th* nature mentioned In tho bill. BROUGHTON FINDS ' .FRIEND IN DIXON Dr. Broughton and Thomas Dixon have become firm friends, according to advices from New York. , ‘ Dr. Broughton Is holding a groat re- vival scrvlco in Gotham. Dr. Dixon and his wife attend every service. Dr. Broughton rides about In Dr. Dixon’s automobile, and visits at the Dixon home. It will be remembered that when "The Clansman’’ first visited Atlanta Dr. Broughton and Dr. Dixon said some uncomplimentary things about each other.
