CHAPTER XXVIII.
Tho Promise Kept
Oh. you can Imagine what they were.
’Monica. Raymond doee not explain. I
suppose It tie 11 accused him of prevent
ing me from yielding to hie request, and
threatened to punteh him In some way
or other for his conduct. Ills letter was
evidently extremely violent In Its lan
guage, for.Raymond says he fears Ba
sil must either have token to drinking
or else must be deranged.
"•If he gives you trouble In any way
let me know Immediately, and I will
return at once nnd have a Anal under
standing with Basil.' These are Ray
mond's very Wonts. Monica, nnd I feel
exceedingly fearful over the matter nnd
only thnt t had promised Dr. Mueller
to come here this afternoon I think I
should have gone straight to Redbrow
and given Basil a piece of my mind
nt Inst!"
“It was ns well you did not. Syl
via. It would probably have only made
things more unpleasant for you. I
think there will be a much quieter,
more natural way out of the difficulty
than that you should figure as a trage
dlenne. And here Is Dr. Mueller him
self bearing down upon us. How pic
turesque he looks In that Velvet coat
and brond hat!”
Dr. Mueller was Indeed approaching
In the glorious sunshine of the Sep
tember afternoon, and Sylvia had not
time to question the meaning of Moni
ca's cabalistic words, as to the "much
quieter and more natural way out of
the difficulty.” She decided to Investl-
gaet the matter, however, at another
time. <
A Love Betrayed.
"I caught sight of you from that
wooded knoll over ther,” Mueller said,
smiling radiantly as he shook hands
with both girls. "It was very good
of you to come so early In the after
noon. We shall have plenty of time
now to go through the house before
the twilight gathers.”
Mueller's strange eyes had turned to
Sylvia Thurston's sweet face, lingering
there for a little with a look In them
that Monica, at least, found It no diffi
cult task to Interpret.
“He's over head and ears In love
with Sylvia, of course,” Monica said to
herself. "And I think hell succeed In
winning her, too, whatever her feelings
may be for Basil.”
They were slowly crossing the park
In the meantime, following an Irregular
oaks and cedars.
The boom-boom of the waves quiv
ered In tho mellow nlr. came with every
light gust that rustled tile fading leaves
and whlspored amid the yellow clover.
"And now to explore the haunted
mansion,” Mueller said, as they turned
down a bypath leading to tho front
avenue, and soon found themselves In
the sheltered park, In the heart of
Which the old mansion dreams amid
Its brooding trees.
The Hsunted House,
An Irregular, straggling pile, with
steep roofs, tall Ivied chimneys, long
narrow windows lurking everywhere
nnd thickly bordered with the dark
green and golden Ivy which almost cov.
ered the walls from basement to roof
such was The Hollow* and In the
quivering, amber sunshine of this ra
dlant September afternoon It certalnlj
did not Impress Sylvia Thurston will
any of the weird attributes of a haunt,
ed house.
When she entered the mansion, how
ever, and followed her host from room
to room, from gallery to gallery-, Syl
via's Impressions become gradually al
tered, an.l she began to feel a queer
llttlo thrill now and then, which warn
ed her not to glance either behind her
or between the apertures of partly
opened doors.
•'Why, Sylvia, you have grown quite
pale!” Monica said, taking one of her
friend's haiyds reassuringly In her
hearty grasp. They had explored the
"haunted" Red Gallery by that time.
“Do let us get out of this. Dr. Mueller,
please! It Is all very Interesting, but
Just a little bit trying to the nerves.”
"Very well, then; let us go down to
the Inhabited part of the house. But
prepare yourself for a shock. The
rooms contain the bare necessaries of
civilisation."
They descended to the west drawing
room, a beautiful old room, with an Im
mense oriel window, from which the
view of the lake and the magnificent
old trees that studded It was Indeed a
Joy to the eye of the beholder.
With the exception of a dozen spin
dlelegged chairs, upholstered In a faded
yellow satin, a few tables and lounges
and an ancient, high-backed piano, the
room had no other furniture, and Dr.
Mueller proceeded to explain the mean
ing of such a' state of things.
Mueller’s Explanation,
"Tou sec, I’ve only come to this
house by way of an experiment. I said
to myself that I should test It for a
month or two; and on this account It
was not worth while getting It prop
erly furnished. These old things were
brought here from my place near New
York, which, since my father's death. Is
occupied only by a staff of servants.
And now let us get over to our tea
and talk to our hearts' content."
The meal was a very pleasant one,
and when It was over Monica turned
to Sylvia.
Now, Sylvia, forget all about the
haunted gallery and let tu be merry!
For my part, I feel Inclined to sing
something, If I may?” And she glanced
laughingly at her host. ,
"Certainly, Miss Peard. This old
room hasn't heard a song probably for
many years; It will be a very wel
come renewal of its -former festive
days.”
"Let us sing something together, Syl
via,” Monica said. ‘Til tell you what—
let us sing that old English ballad that
Raymond taught us some years ago—
'The Logan Stone.' "We've not sung it
for a long time now.”
“The Logan StoneT" Dr. Mueller
echoed, with an odd, startled Inflection
in hU voice.
Yea; It Is a quaint, plaintive old
song; Dr- Muelter,” Monica explained.
"The lover and his sweetheart are In
Stone, and one night the girl Is acci
dentally drowned on her way to the
tryst; but her wraith comes and stands
beside the Logan Stone on the cliff,
Just above the Bpot where she was
drowned, and when the lover takes her
hand In his, lo!—
'"Twas cold, so cold—
And she gave a drenry moan!
Then led him to the pool of death
Below the Logan Stone.”
Monica crooned the weird, minor air
of tho old ballad os she repeated the
words; and as Mueller listened a gray
shadow crept over hi* face—or was It
but the shadow of the muslin curtains
swaying In the breeze from the sea?
"No, Monica, please don't ask me to
sing that song!" Sylvia said very earn,
estly.
"But I thought It was quite a favor
ite of yours, Sylvia? It certainly used
to be at one time."
"Yes; when Rnymond first taught It
to us. But not nftcrwnrd. Why, don't
you remember, Monica, he got It from
that poor girl, Pattle Pollard, the nleco
of the landlord of the Black Horse Inn,
near Tarrytown, where Raymond stay
ed once, of twice for some months?
Whenever I hear the song I can not
help thinking of Pattle’s own tragic
death and of all that wretched story."
She turned to Carl Mueller.
"I dare say you read all about It In
the newspapers at the time, Dr. Muel
ler. The Black Horse Inn Poisoning
Case,' It was headed; I must say I
have always believed that that mys
terious Dr. Newell was guilty. He must
have been a hateful man!”
"Yes, I remember, of course, I re
member," Mueller returned absently.
"It was a very mysterloua affair-
very.”
