JAPS SKETCH
FORT M’PIIERSON
When E. L. Adams, of $24 Peters
street, detected two Japanese with
sketch pad and camera at the
Fort McPherson barracks, Monday af
ternoon, he hurried to the department
of the gulf and informed the officers
of what he believed to be a most fla-
.grant violation of military rules.
The officers told Mr. Adams that
Fort McPherson is an open post, and
that slnco It Is so far from the coast
all the sketches and pictures the vlsl
tors might make would be of little
service, even If they were designed for
the Information of the Japanese gov
ernment.
The Japanese stated that they are
employed by a Chicago landscape com
pany, and they were allowed to sketch
to their hearts' content.

MOTHER HAD PRESENTIMENT;
HER SON DROWNED IN EAST
Friends of Mrs. John W. Varnell, attending to business matters In At
whose son, Eugeno Varnell, was
drowned In New York last Friday, say
that tho mother had a strange pre
sentiment that something ' untoward
was Imminent.
Mr. Varnell nnd the four children
had left n month before to make their
home In New York nfter a long resi
dence In Atlanta. Mrs. Varnell re
mained to make the final arrange
ments. At first she Intended going by
boat Thursday, hut said she felt that
it would take too long.
Wednesday night, while dining with
friends, she said that although there
was no renson why she should hurry
to New York, Bhe felt that she must
go Immediately. She had not finished
lanta and greatly regretted leaving.
In speuklng of her departure she said
she wished all her children were
’’safely'' back In Atlanta. Bhe left
Thursday at noon and probably arrived
In New York Friday afternoon. It Is
possible that she saw her son before
his untimely death, but more likely
she arrived after the accident.
The boy,, who was hardly 17,
well known nnd well liked In Atlanta,
He attended the public schools nnd
was an usher at the Grand oiiera house.
His father, John VV. Varnell, was one
of the oldest employees of the Geor
gia Railway and Electric Company,
and, after innny years of service, left
them last winter to go with a con
crete company with headquarters
New York.
REP. SHA W IS AE7ER THE
DRINKER A S WELL AS SELLER
One of the clearest headed and
frankest talking members In the house
was Emmett B. 6haw, of Clay county.
As chairman of the enrollment commit
tee, Mr. Shaw's time was almost con
tinually occupied In patient detail
work verifying the bills. In conse
quence he seldom spoke. But when the
prohibition question was up, Mr.
Shaw was always on hand.
When the locker tax question was up
the last day, there was a great deni
said about fraudulent sales under the
locker system. Mr. Shaw took little
stock In that argument, but went
straight to the heurt of the question
Said he:
"I take small stock In tttc argument
about selling liquor under tills pre
tence. We have forbidden sales, hut I
want to go further. 1 nin Just us
much hi favor of stopping the drinking
a* I am for stopping the sale. Come
to the front, men. l.ot’s stop this club
drinking business. The locker tux will
stop It—nigger and dude, club man nnd
working man—stop them all.
’’That’s whnt l am after, the drinker,
ns well as the seller, and this Is the
way to get ’em. I vote for a *19,000
tax, and more, If you will let me.”

At the Casino.
"In Atlantic City," a musical comedy
with more vaudeville than either
music or comedy, and plenty of all
three; was presented at the Bijou-Mon
day night by tho John B. Wills Com
pany.
It Is Just such a play as should be
designed for a summer theater—no plot
to unravel, no problem to solve, not
even any new jokes to figure out or
old ones to recall. Just a merry bunch
of dancing and singing and a little
acrobatic work, all loosely Joined to
gether—and everybody In the large au
dience laughed, applauded lustily and
were satisfied.
The honors were borne off by Walter
S. Wills with his funny pair of logs
and Jucque Bradley who sang fairly
and looked line. Margaret Shannon
has a contralto voice which she used
to advantage.
The acrobatic work of Wallcy Hels-
ton was of the very best sort. Charles
Brower as the Dutchman, Otto Buck,
was inoffensive. He nnnouneed that
the bill would he changed Thursday
night from "In Atlantic City" to "Two

fact a number of times.

her troubles to the audience. Miss
Carl, the new singer of still newer Il
lustrated songs in "Bunker Hill," has
