The urgent de-

tho market not only held Its own but scor

attention Is
irospeets In .... y—-x—
-Mention to the fart that foreign spinners
nre well supplied. They nlso predict that
the strained flunnelnl eondltlons nre obliged
sooner or Inter to have nil effect on prices.
It will be noticed, however, that almost
every !»onrlsh argument Is tirefneed with ’’If
we have :t late frost.” The bulls sny flint
the Improvement In the Atlantic's Is more
than offset by continued deterioration In
the western l»elt. where rains hare been
deficient, and reports continue to point to
n most gloomy outlook. They Insist that
heavy early commitments aro to lie filled,
and jwdnt to the tremendous premium spots
nre bringing over contracts.
While we 1*ellevc crop eondltlons have
Improved most decidedly In the eastern
belt, and that It Is probable that the dam*
nee retorts from the west are somewhat
exaggerated, there can be no doubt but
thnt the crop ns a whole Is In n most tin
satisfactory condition, and will be espe
cially susceptible to any adverse weather
from now on. to snr nothing of nn early or
even nn average frost. Last year 400.000
bales of now cotton had been ginned Iteforo
September 1. while prospects are thnt by
that date this senson we will have ginned
eonsldernbflly less than 100,009. All condi
tions point to the latest crop slneo 1901
Statistics point to absolute necessity of at
least a 13.000,OOObnle crop, mid from the
present outlook It Is Impossible to figure
where the yield will amount to such ft
figure, llrndstreet’s Trade Review says In
part: “In spite of high raw material the
mills nre prosperous and dividends large,
surplus henvy and prices high. Mills are
oversold and some
fusing orders.”
It Is entirely possible thnt ns soon aft
the urgent demand to fill early commit
ments Is satisfied and cotton begin* to
move more freely prices will have a tempo
rary decline, and for itils reason wo are
not Inclined to fnror purchases except on
recessions, but we continue to warn our
friends against short selllug. ns we liellere
contracts nre obliged to work closer to spot
prices.
