Half an hour later the good clergy

shadows were beginning to gather.
His wife found Rose Thurston all
alone In the drawing room, Mias Le-
tltia being "not at home"—whether
actually so or only figuratively, Mrs.
Prosser could but conjecture.
Rose Thurston was reclining as usual
on her lounge, from which she partly
rose as her visitor entered the room.
In .the shadowy light Mrs. Prosser was
startled as she looked at the Invalid
girl.
"Rose, my dear, you really should be
In bed I” Mra. Prosser exclaimed, for
the pallor of the gtrl'a face was death
like, and there were deep, livid circles
under her eyes.
"If I went to bed I could not sleep—
I could not rest!” Rose Thurston said.
In a very low, nervous voice. ‘T only
' regret that I was not strong enough to
go over to my cousin's at Moorcombe
today. But I could not go. The terri
ble newa completely overcame me."
There was something mechanical In
the way she aald theae words, and her
eyes were searching the sharp, nar
row face before her nil the time, aa
though she half suspected that Mra.
Prosser's visit might not be altogether
one of friendly sympathy, and that
the clergyman's wife might be on the
point of touching on a particular sub
ject that bad hung like a sword above
Rose's head ever since the tidings of
Raymond Thurston's death had reach
ed her.
Could Mrs. prosaer have beard any

Bose Thurston drew In her breath
with a little shiver and braced herself
to meet the attack courageously, dar

But Mrs. Prosser talked on and on,
narrated details of the harrowing state
of things at Moorcombe, dwelt pity.

a little sigh of relief escaped her.
It was at that moment that Mrs.
Prosser, with the air of having sud
denly recollected something of Impor
tance, turned abruptly—she had been
gazing out at the rugged shoulder of
the purpling meadows visible from the
window near her, and looking keenly
at Rose, said quickly:
“And where Is Basil? Ho was not
at Moorcombe today."
Rose started almost Imperceptibly,
but Instantly girded herself as If with
steel.
"No. Indeed, and he will be shocked
to hear what has happened when he

Mrs.' Prosser was silent for a few
minutes. Whatever her thoughts may
have been, she kept her own counsel.
Roso Thilrston'a words, tones, looks
and manner seemed to carry truth
along with them, and the minister's
wife had evidently no more to say.
Mrs. Prosser took her leave shortly

distracted mind. "Well, whatever may
bo whispered, there can be no evidence
—no proofs—no witnesses.”
Her frail form was shaken from
head to foot In this paroxysm; but llt-
tlo by little It subsided. A new Tear
had suddenly thrust Itself Into tho
girl's harassed heart, a fear that stead
ied her with the sheer terror of It.
Fesr.
"What If Ruth Pritchard knows the
truth? What if she recovers her speech
and tells what she knows?”
Then came a wild answer to her own
query.
. "But Basil Is gone—they can not Ana
him! They shall not And him. No
one knows of his midnight return to
the houso last night—no one but my
self—not even Aunt Letty—and no one
shall ever know of It. Nothing would
convince me that Basil could be guilty
of deliberate crime, but In a moment
of madness he may—he may have
committed some desperate act!"
Tho hurriedly written -note which
Basil Thurston hod pushed under hla
sister’s door the previous night had
seemed to point to eome such unfor
tunate occurrence, but the words of
tbe farewell lines were .vague, and the
writing, moreover, was so Illegible that
Rose had been able to guess only at
tho meaning of two-thirds of what the
half sheet of paper contained.
Sho had thrust the document into
the fire at once, and In her heart of
hearts she decided to bury forevermore
the circumstances of her midnight con
versation with her brother.
In whatever direction the Inquiries
Into tho tragedy of Raymond's death
should lead, no word or act of hers, at
least, should Implicate Basil.

Luckily for me, the task of breaking

At last, growing thoroughly ashamed
of myself, I crept back to the house,
and tbe worst bad happened. Ray

soothingly on Monica’s shoulder.
“I am greatly troubled about her,
Mr. Prosier; greatly. I cannot quite
understand her. She has not shed a
tear today, and yet at times she seems
to realise that Raymond is dead. She
had a long talk today with the police
