of Dr. 8. W. Harrla, Jr., will be con
ducted at the Methodist church here
this afternoon - at 3:J0 o'clock. Rev.
Dunbar and Rev. Dosler will conduct
the services, which wll be under the
direction of the Knights of Pythias of
Carrollton. The family and near rela
tives of the deceased are all here to at-
tend the funeral.

HEARS OF SON’8 DEATH.
Former Adjutant General S. W. Har
ris was talking to Btate Treasurer Park
Wednesday when he received news of
the death of his son. Dr. 8. W. Harris,
Jr.. In Carrollton.
Judge Harris left Carrollton Tuesday
afternoon to visit his son, Dr. Leroy
Harris, secretary of the state board of
health. Ths message came to Com
missioner of Pensions J. W. Lindsey,
stating that br. Harris had been found
dead in bed.
Captain Lindsey broke the news to
Judge Harris, who almost collapsed. He
wri carried to the office of his son, who
administered to him. They left Wed
nesday afternoon for Carrollton.
BAPTIST MEETING

The closing session of the 8tone
Mountain Association of the Baptist
church was held Thursday at College
Park. The opening sermon of the ses
sion was preached by Rev. Dr. Reed, of
Decatur, while Dr. John E. White, of
Atlanta, preached the missionary ser
mon. The association Includes churches
from Atlanta east to Social Circle and
has a membership of about 11,000.
Judge George Hlllyer, of Atlanta. Is
acting as moderator, John M. Green Is
vice moderator and J. 8. Jempton Is
clerk. During the sessions reports have
been heard on the contributions dur
ing the year to the cause of State, home
and foreign missions and to other
causes of the Baptist church. The
association has pledged Itself to raise
940,000 for the endowment fund of Mer
cer.

spectacle of a boy "treed” by a police
man was the occasion for the gather
ing of a crowd of upward of 300 peo
ple here yesterday. The police are
conducting a crusade against young
sters with Alabama slings. Young
George Delter was caught In the act
of using one of the David-Gollath
weapons by Policeman McGrath. The
boy scrambled up a tree. The officer
ordered, pleaded, coaxed, threatened,
promised and bluffed In turn to no
effect.

Postal Employee Set Upon
and Beaten On Chicago

Chicago. Sept. I.—Criminal prosecu
tion of a striker for tampering with
telegraph wire, was begun yesterday
by the Western Union Telegraph Com
pany. , A warrant was issued for
George 8. Blrdsall, a striking telegraph
operator, charging him with cutting a
telegraph line and also damaging a
switchboard used by the company.
Officials of the telegraph company
said last night that the Increase In wire
“trouble" recently had forced them to
take action to protect their, property.
The offense' complained of Is said to
have been committed August 22. The
punishment under the law Is a fine of
1100 to 1600 br Imprisonment In the
county Jail not exceeding one year, or
both.
The seepnd casa of violence In the
strike occurred early yesterday morn
ing, when three meb attacked E. A. El
liott, a Postal employee, on a Humboldt
Bark "V train. Elliott, who was con
siderably bruised, later swore out a
warrant and James J. Brady, a former
operator far the Postal company, was
arrested. i
The telegraphers have sent a second
tetter to George J, Gould and Miss
Hslen Gould, asking for sympathy In
their strike. Charges were made
against tne officials of the Western
Union. ’

officers of the law discovered an em
ployee af Uncle 8am Industriously
killing pigeons on the custom house
here yesterday, they were In a quan
dary .as to what course to pursue. Un
der the Federal statutes the offender
may not be arrested on government
property. The officers feared that If
they sought out the United States
commissioner the offender might es
cape while they were gone. One of
the officers called to him nnd asked
him to come to him for a minute. The
man obeyed and was taken In custody..

HAS 400 STUDENTS

Auburn, Ala., 8ept. 6.—Ths Alabama
Polytechnic- Institute opened Its doors
yesterday with about 400 applicants on
hand. It Is thought the enrollment will
reach 600 this week. Two-thirds of
those present are new students.
Tho new dormitory, to cost about
*30,000, will be given to contractors In
a few days. It Is needed to accommo
date the cadets, as the town can fur
nish room for not more than 600.

Adams, of Cornelia, was burned to
death In hla dwelling Tuesday nljtlit.
The house caught Are about 11 o’clock
from the stove Due. Hr. .Adams,
thinking hla baby waa atilt In the house,
rushed In and waa not able tu come
out. Later It was learned that his wife
had the baby outside. Mr. Adams re
cently moved to Cornelia from White
county, Georgia.
