Improving market.
New York, Sept. 7.—Town Topics:
"While the tone of the market Is more
bullish than for days past, we expect to
see backing and tilling operations dur
ing the, next two or three days rather
than any further very extended Im
provement. The commission house ele
ment is Inclined to take small profits
when offered as well as to protect tlielr
position with close stop orders, so that
there Is now a considerable, bull follow
ing that could be shaken out by an
aggressive party of hears, and It Is not
believed that those who are responsible
for the Improvement In the mark,et will
be sorry If their following -would be
made in thls-way more restricted. Good
railroad stocks are still cheap, and we
can not become bearish at these figures
on the Hills nnd Hardmans, St. Paul,
Atchison, Heading. Baltimore, Delx/.vare
and Hudson, Northwestern, Illinois
Central, Louisville and Atlantic Coast
Line. We ltdnk, however, that these
stocks are all purchasable, In all like
lihood, at more attractive levels next
week, as a reaction is to be looked for
in view of the advance of 5 to 10 points
from recent levels. Amalgamated does
not act very well, and New York Cen
tral, for fear ot a dividend reduction,
lags behind other rails, and bearish
pressure Is to be leaked for In these
stocks.
We can see no Inducement on the
long side of cotton at these figures and
would advlst watting for a good reac
tion before going long for a turn.
Wheat Is still In demand from abroad,
but we think grain prices are hovering
near the top.

DAILY 8TOCK LETTER.
New York. Sept. 7—Bartlett, Frasier
it Carrington: The market ruled very
quiet and some sailing was Induced by
the profeanlonal contingent. Tb« Hor- •
rlmana nnd other active leaders eased
oft about a point. After the flret hour
the market steadied and a hardening
tone was evident. The reports that
already there were recorded 109 bid"
for the new city bond Issue wae re
ceived favorably. Thfc bank statement
showed a Ions In reserve of about
It,3M,000. Prices ruled quiet and tho
fluctuations wera narrow and entirely
profeanlonal. Tha lose in cash amount
ed to 3114,000,000. The loan In- ,
crease to very small and wae looked I
upon an favorable, especially In view
of the advance In pricee for the week.
The market shows a fair undertone; at
the aame time we would advise buying
only on declines from preaent levels.
