"I must attend to her case nfter she has helped me through this hole of Ruth Pritchard's possible recovery." He stopped, thought a moment and then uttered these fateful words: "Ruth Pritchard must not recover." CHAPTER LIV. 8ylvia Qoee. Nurse Mason took up her new duties that night at Moorrombe, having first of all had a long talk with Dr. Peard, who had called to see Ruth Pritchard. "She seems a thoroughly capable person," the doctor said, a* he rejoined the Judge and Mrs. Thurston In the drawing room. “Between ourselves and the wall, I'm not struck with her personal appearance. She has a hard, shrewd, masculine face, but that la, of course, only a secondary consideration. The main point Is that she knows her business. Ruth will be perfectly safe In her hands, I am convinced.” "It was extremely kind of Dr. Mueller to hnve nttended to this matter,” Mrs. Thurston said. "And what Is more, he declares he will not permit ue to be under any expense because, of the nurse's presence In the house. But that la really out of the question. It would be too unreasonable of us to permit It.” Upstairs In Ruth Pritchard's room. Sylvia was at the same moment talk ing with Nurse Mason, and endeavoring to force herself to form a favorable Im pression of this stranger whom Carl Mueller hud Introduced to Moorcombe. llut In vain. There was something In the new nurse's face—something In her mnnner, In the very sound of her voice that chilled and repelled Sylvia. A vague sense of distrust and dislike oppressed hc» whenever she looked Into Nurse Masoirs small, deep-set, search. Ing gray eyes. "Poor Ruth! I wonder what aho thinks of tills woman, or Is she nt all conscious of her presence?" Sylvia thought, as she glanced toward the mute, motionless form In the bed—upon the mask-llke, pallid face, with Its set features, Its ghastly mimicry of death! •'Have you ever seen a similar case to till", nurse?" Sylvia naked, as she withdrew her sorrowful glance from Ruth. "I've nursed a woman In Chicago whose symptoms and this girl's were almost Identical. Miss Thurston. Nurse Mason nppenrs are greater I the surface. "And that brat of Bracebrldge?" Mueller remarked nonchalantly, al though he awaited her answer keenly. "It's a sickly thing," returned Nurse Mason. "I have left It three miles south of bars at a farm house, the mis tress of which I knew long, ago, when I needed the help of a woman—you ought to remember full well. The child will be safe enough while I am here." “Tou probably will be here a long time," remarked Mueller, carefully watching the nurse's face, “unless—" "No more of your unleesee, Carl," brusquely replied the woman. "I won't have them. After that little affair of Bracebrldge's wife I don't want any tnore of those unlese cases In mtno. Sylvia asked, with a shudder. "Never one word, Mies Thurston. She seemed to be making an effort to speak now and then, but the attempt was utterly futile. Even by putting one's ear to her lips It was Impossible to distinguish the syllables—Impossible, Indeed, to be quite certain os to whether she was trying to speak or not." "How terrible! And was her mind clear all the time? Was she fully con scious of what was sold and done In her room?” "She stated afterward that she had been fully conscious all the time. But I've read of a cose, Miss Thurston, where a man was actually laid out for death and put Into a coffin while In a trance, and although he was actually conscious of every movement that was going on, he could not so much as move an eyelid to betray hie real state. Luckily, at the last moment, as they were screwing down the lid of the cof fin, the horror of hie situation broke through the physical trammels that fettered him and he uttered a shriek of horror and started up, a raving ma niac." “There Is a terrible story of Sheridan lo i-’anu's based on somewhat similar lines to that,” Monica Peard, who had quietly entered the room during Nurse Mason's recital, now remarked. "Yes, I've read It: The Boom In the Dragon Volant,' I think Is the name; but I'm not quite sure.” "I think, Sylvia, we ought to leave Nurse Mason with her patient,” Mon ica said, as shs became aware of the pallor of Sylvia’s face and the startled look In her eyes. “Come, dear.” And she almost forcibly led Sylvia from the room. Dislike. ‘‘I dare say that woman knows her business, but I must say I don’t care for her,” Monica sold, when she had returned to Sylvia'* room, which she shared with her friend. > "Nor do I. Oh, Monica won’t It bo a terrible thing If poor Ruth Is doomed to this death-ln-llfe for a prolonged time? 1 can not endure the thought." "Well, we must only hope for ths best, dear. There la one thing certain, Ruth will get very excellent care. Dad will keep her under his eyt constant ly, and It Nurss Mason does not turn out to be all that eho should be, ehe had better look out for some other post —as she will find when she has has dad to deal with." Monica’s encouraging words and manner comforted Sylvia, as they usu ally did Indeed, and during the en suing couple of days Monica hurdly ever left Sylvia's side. "I will not allow her to give way to any fresh fears and anxieties,” Monica said to herself. "I shall be always at hand, ready to nip any such unhealthy symptoms In ths very bud." The most trying test of Monica's self-imposed task came when, on the morning of their departure from Moor combe, Sylvia went to Ruth’s bed room to bid goodby to her foster-sister. As she threw herself on her knees | beside Ruth's bed and stooped over the deathlike face, the memories of the past happy years thronged fast and . thick on Sylvia's heart—the years In which Rutli and Raymond and herself I had shared so many Joys together— an<l Monica, us she keenly watched ! Sylvia's face, suddenly became aware . that now or never she was called upon to prove the power of her tactics. "Come, Sylvia. Come, deur! Come this Instunt!" she cried almost stern ly, as she forcibly lifted the girl from her knees. T will allow you to kiss her once, only once, and then you j must leave her. We shall have a close- run as It le for the truln. And If we lose It, all our arrangement* will be : upset." By sheer strength of will (ae well ue of arms) Monica gained her |>olnt. Not,, Indeed, until Sylvia found herself seat ed in the old carrluge and already half way down the avenue did she fully re alise the facts that the ordeal was over and that she had actually started on her Journey. At Cleveland Mueller was waiting eagerly and Impatiently at the station. Hut there was Utile time, and Monica wae glad of It, for speeches of fare well. 'Goodby, darling, and bon voyage. I hope to see you very shortly again. Don't be surprised If I suddenly appear ut Dr. Hurry'* house before the last of the withered leaves have been whirled oflf the tree* by ths wild winds of No vember." 'Oh that the time were come," he said to himself, "when there shall be no more partings between ue!" But even ue the thought crossed his heart a shiver crept through him, and u shadow of apprehension dropped over the sunny prospects. He turned away abruptly. Jumped Into his dogcart out side the station and drove homeward, still haunted by that presentment which It was Impossible to allay. And when be arrived at last at The Hollow and entered hts gloomy, deso late house again—yet again he was seized with the urgent Impulse to fly from this depressing spot, to put an end to this epoch of Ills checkered life, and to go baek to the purpose which had ruled hie life so long. Then suddenly Sylvia's sweet face seemed to come toward him out of the shndowe of the vast hall; the low clear voice that had enthralled him from the moment he hod first met the girl sounded again In his ears. "No, I ran not give her up. It Is too late—too late. Come what may, I shall stand ray ground and await the fulfill- ment of her promise. And who knows? All may turn out happily yet—and the past may be buried and forgotten!" CHAPTER LV. An Invitation. Mueller decided to learn something definite a* to his eager wish that Sylvia should consent to be his wife In June. They had strolled Into Central Park together on this dull January day, and as he touched directly on the subject so near to his heart they came to a sudden pause beneath the gaunt, leafless trees. "You need a thorough change, dear est, that la the truth of It." he said eagerly, pleadingly. "And I want to take you abroad, you see, for some months, and In order to accomplish this we must first of all be married; there Is no other way of arranging matters!
