Fort Morgan, Col., Sept 28.—Guilty of Involuntary manslaughter was the verdict returned this morning by the grand Jury that has been hearing the murder case of Mrs. Nellie Smith, of Snyder, charged with the murder of her own daughter. A year ago her daughter, aged 16, became engaged to a young man. Somo months Inter the girl died under mysterious circum stances, and the autopsy revealed that a criminal operation had been performed. Almost erased by gnef, the mother gave herself up to the officers and confessed that It waa she who had performed the op eration In a desperate attempt to save the girl’s reputation. SHOW COMPLICITY IN BIG LAND FRAUD Bolae, Idaho, Sept, 28.—Half a yard of letters which the government's at torneys In the trial of Senator Borah eay go to show the complicity of former Governor Frank Steunenberg In the al leged Idaho timber land fraud conspir acy were ofTered In evidence yesterday and read to the Jury. The letters were written by William Sweet, one of the Indicted men, who, It Is reported, will take the stand aa a witness for the United States. The documents were produced by J. H. Richards, an attor ney to whom they were written, and who acted aa legal advlaor to Sweet. In one letter Sweet gave the Idea that he wae "In" on tho timber deal. The total was about *29,000, Including a *7,600 note signed by himself and Governor Steunenberg. Officer Shoots Negro. Special to The Georgian. Hollandale, Mlaa., Sept. 28.—A negro, Ora Thomas, was shot and probably fatally wounded at Sontag, Mias., by Constable Tom Garvin. - The shooting occurred near a railroad camp. Officer Garvin had Just arrested the negro upon tho charge of beating a woman. DUTCH DRIVE NATIVES BACK The Hague, Sept, 28.—Official re ports today tell of fierce fighting south of Celebes between the Dutch troops and natives, In which tjie Dutch were victorious. Eleven chiefs and 108 men were killed. The Dutch lost seven. SIXTEEN CHINESE KILLED IN ATTACK Hong-kongr, China, Sept. 28.—Chi nese guards have beaten off an attack of a thousand bandit^ on Tai Lek mar ket, near Fatshan, with a loss of ten rofcbers and six soldiers killed and fifty robbers and ten soldiers wounded. WILL PROBE DEATH OF MRS. BUKELEW Washington, Sept. 28.—Mrs. Margaret F. Bukelew, of MRdlson, WIs., who claimed to be a cousin of Senator La- Follette, was found dead today In her home. A respite of two weeks was granted by Governor Smith Friday afternoon to Charlea Allen, tho negro who wan sentenced to bo hanged at McDonough Saturday for tho murder of another negro named Ben Bltchle. CONGRESSMAN GRIGGS VISITS CAPITOL Congressman James M. Griggs, of the Second congressional district, passed through Atlanta Saturday. on his way to Washington, and stopped over long enough to pay his respects to the- governor and Chairman McLen don, of the railroad commission. Judge Griggs states that the race for congress In his district is warming up considerably, but that ho Is very well satisfied with his prospects of a seat In the national house when the next con gress convenes. In order to establish the extent of its Jurisdiction Chairman McLendon Instructed Judge J. K. Hines, attorney for the railroad commission, to render an' opinion as early as possible con cerning his Interpretation of the law enlarging the powers of the commis sion. The question Involved Is whether the Atlanta Baggage and Cab Company la a common carrier. Judge Hines will probably submit his opinion Monday.
