Washington, Oct. 2.—In a report from
Rio de Janeiro to the department of
i. commerce and labor, Consul G. K. An
drews states that one of the most
significant facta in the commercial sit
uation In Brasil la that not only are
the Import* of cotton and cotton man
ufactures Increasing, but that the de
velopment of the cotton production and
cotton manufacturing Industries of the
country la proceeding at a very* rapid
rate.
The part the United Statea hua In the
Import trade la not only small, but It
Is growing amnller from year to year,
the decrease between 1905 and 1906 be
ing eepeclally discouraging. At present
and under present conditions the
United States can hardly be said to

Savannah, On., Oct. 2.—The funeral
of Lieutenant John If. Furse, t,'. 8. N.,
who was killed at hie post of duty on
the battleship Illinois, off Boston, will
probably not tak* place until Friday or
Saturday, owing to the delay Incident
to bringing hie remains to his former
horns in Savannah. H. 8. Furse, father
of the unfortunate young officer, left to
bring hlS son's body back to Savannah
last night. >
Lieutenant Furse was 27 years of ago
and Is pleasantly remembered In Sa
vannah, where he attended the public
schoole and spent hla boyhood. He
graduated at the fl.VVttl academy In 1901
and has since been rapidly promoted.
He was at tils post as officer of the deck
when. In the storm, a wave whsdted
over the deck- and bore him agalhst the
side of the ship, killing him. A pa
thetic Incident In connection with his
untimely death Is the fact that he was
engnged to he married during the pres
ent month. Miss Bertha Batchelor, hla
fiance. Is expected from her honte. In
Littleton, N. H , to attend the funeral.
.Lieutenant Furse Is survived by his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Furse;
three brothers, David, James and S. 8.,
Jr., and four sisters, Julia, Eugenia,
Margaret and Rta.

terdny confiscated flrework* and ex
plosive* consigned to Joseph E. Carbo,
an Italian who Is now under bond after
conviction for inanalaughter. an ex
plosion In hi* firework* factory last
December having resulted In the death
of the assistant superintendent of the
fire department and other firemen. Car
bo had -publicly announced that he
would have no further connection with
firework*, nnd at first denied knowl
edge of the consignment, but acknowl
edged his guilt when he learned there
waa no ordinance against the Importa
tion of fireworks.

erate reunion held In Annlaton wsa the

TO TAKE LICENSE
Mra. Hattie Barnett, the woman de
tective who waa fined by Recorder
Broyles a few days ago on the charge
of doing business without a license,
will make formal application at the
next meeting of tho police commtxalon
for a detective license.
Mrs. Barnett, who has been follow
Ing the business of a sleuth for the
post twenty years, having ntudled It
In the big Northern and Eastern cities,
says she had no Idea of violating the
low, but was merely following the In
structions of her legal advisers. She
says she was informed that she needed
no license, provided »he worked by the
day.
She assorts that she ha* been mak
ing no secret nt her profession, stating
that practically all of the police officers
nnd detectives know her. and charge.,
that her arrest was due to malice. 8ho
declare- that a city official, not a po
lice officer, and whom she character
izes ns a "buttlnsky," waa responsible
for the prosecution.
Mrs Harnett states that on numerous
occasions she hn* aided city detectives
and police In their work and that her
home, 26 Luckie street, has been visit
