Atlanta has paid mor. for permanent Improvements for school purposes this year than has been paid any year for more than ten years. Alderman E. C. Peters, chairman of the finance committee, Is authority for this statement, and, needless to aay, he knows whereof he speaks. The total amount paid for permanent Imnrovementa Is $111,700. This amount was paid for the new Third snd Fourth ward schools now In course of erection and the lota on which they will stand; the Kendrick home on Washington street, which will be made an annex to the Girls’ High School, and the large lot at the corner of Luckle and Pine etreets, on which wilt stand the new Fifth ward school. It is proposed that the lot on which now stands the Marietta Street school— the Fifth ward—be used as the site for the branch Carnegie library. Mr. Car negie has offered the city $20,000 for the building of this school, on condi tion that the city furnish the location. The park board hns recommended that the lot be used for the library, the finance committee seems to favor It, and It Is highly probable that council will vote so to use the lot at the regular session next Monday afternoon. Lynch and occupied by Silver man’s restaurants and saloon and the J. J. Goodrum Tobacco Company, has been leased for a term of five years by the Silverman Catering Company. The lease was recorded In the county clerk’s office Friday and dates from October 7. For the first two years the Silver- man Catering Company will pay $668.67 per month or $8,000 a year. Tho lease which expires on October 7 wns held by the H. Silverman Com' pany, which owns the saloon, and la entirely separate from the Silverman Catering Company, which runs the res taurant. I for one am willing to pay more than ever be fore, as I believe there will be no alump when prohibition goes Into effect. "We have not yet decided what uae we will make of the bar. It would make a handsome soda fountain and we are thinking of uelng It for that purpose.’’ In the’ building are two restaurants, one up stairs and one down; and Good- rum cigar stand and the Silverman sa loon.
