Charley Grapewln, who appears next
week at the Bijou, enjoys a good laugh

act. Last season in company with a
number of people he was enjoying a
general chat on affairs when the sub

It came to Charley, who said, serious

fiddles and does fancy steps all at once,

of a lecture to be delivered Friday night
by Rev. George R. Stuart at the Bap

lecture will be under the auspices of
the Ladles' Aid Society and the pro

the cherlty department of the Taber
nacle Infirmary. The price of admis

The annual rally day of the Sabbath
school of the First Presbyterian church,

Newport News, Va„ Oct. 4.—Judge
Blockatone, In the circuit court of Elis
abeth county, has refused a new trial
to Julius Pavlllc. the wife murderer,
who was sentenced to ten years in the
penitentiary. After his attorneys hod
argued for a new trial, Pavlllc declared
he should either be hanged or set free,
and commented upon the Incident last
Friday when the Judge went to sleep
on the bench.

erans, the Confederate reunion to occur
here on November I2-1S. promises to
be one of the most pleasant and suc

The various committees met yesterday
afternoon at the offices of the Cham
ber of Commerce and all made favor
able reports regarding the progress thst
Is being made on reunion arrangements.
Secretary Moore, of the Chamber of
Commerce, today sent out a call for
