A WEEK’S OFFERINGS A T LOCAL PLA YHOUSE
I “THEJIMPIRE
Joe Whitehead Comes to the
Grand in Famous Musi
cal Satire.
The Atkin-filnger Company will pre
sent the musical entire on football and
baseball, “The ymplre,” at the^ Grand
Wednesday and Thursday next for
three performances. That It Is staged
.by that master hand of novelties, Fred
Wayburn, and directed by Harry Ask-
In, owner of “The Time, the Place and
the Girl.” Is sufficient guarantee rrf the
excellence of the organisation. In “The
Umpire” there fs no doddering and
bibulous old king, no prime minister
and no ugly female with conspicuous
matrimonial ambitions ns In most mu
sical offerings. Instead the^e Is an up-
to-date tale of love and intrigue,
wherein the dramatic value* are nice
ly worked out with ramifications which
Include the national games, baseball
nnd football, the national vice, “graft,"
and other ultra-modern themes.
The company Includes Joe White-
head, who Is said to be the best man
that ever play^l “The Umpire;” Har
ry Hanlon. George Demarel. Charles
Horn. Helena Ballinger, Dorothy Webb,
Virginia Ainsworth. Helen Wilton, a
chorus of forty and the Xamoua foot
ball broilers. '
“Dream City" Is a Dream.
It was a jolly night. If there w*aa
anybody In the audience at the Grand
Friday night who didn't laugh In the
last net It was because all the laugh
/had been exhausted before that. For
Little chip Is chlppler than-ever and
Mary Marble is just the same dainty
little bit of feminity that has made her
a favorite all over everywhere.
Hut there are other old favorites, too.
Johnson nnd Harty. who have been a
iMipular team for years, are appearing
In “Dream . City” and add their full
share of fun. besides displaying a pair
of excellent voices to good advantage
in clover parodies. Little Marie
Panrhonett! Is bark again with her
usual dance, and Dan Marble has a
minor port In the production. The
whole company Is composed of people
well remembered through frequent ap
pearances In Atlanta.
“Dream City" offers something new
every now and then.. The authors have
broken away from many musical com
edy traditions and have proved their
wisdom. The offering Is constructed
purely to amuse and It succeeds, partly
through knockabout methods and p
!y by the humor of some really cli
lines. The costumes are fetching, the
chorus as pretty as the average and,
the music one of the features.
The singing of Mme. Lillian Blauvelt
the famous grand opera, and concert
singer, proved a delight to music lov
ers. She appeared In the second act,
opening with the waits song from Gou
nod's “Romeo et Juliet," which gave
her an excellent opportunity to display
her beautiful voice, and responding to
tjiree recalls, closing with .a little
ballad which brought renewed ap«
plause.
The engagement closes w*lth Satur
day inatlnee and night performances.

Varied Bill Comes Next
Week to Popular Vau
deville House.
“A Bell Boy” Opon, Week.
The Grand will offer .Monday and
Tueaday next a musical comedy enti
tled "A Bell Boy.”
The following notice of the piece,
which appeared In The Roanoke Even
ing New* of September 2«, glvee some
Idea of the cntrrtnlnment:
“■A Bell Boy.- a new muelcal mlx-
up aa It la appropriately termed, was
presented at the Academy last night.
Johnny Galvin was the prince of fun-
makera In the leading 'mlx-up,' with
pretty and graceful Ella Galvin an hla
•alde-parti)er,- aaalated by a number of
clever people, rharlea Clifford, aa Den
nis Doogan.: James A. Grady, as .Mac
Coogan. made a hit with their witty
remarks and romte stunts.
"George Summers, as Muggy Me-
Graw, and Dan Oay. as Frank Per-
klna, are clever dancers, making a
favorable Impression. The singing was
above the average and the dunrlng In
the second-act was of the best. The
moon effect In the second act was
beautiful, bebig one of the prettiest
scenes presented on the local stago.”
' Otis Skinner Coming.
Charles Frohman will present Otis
Skinner here this season In a new play,
"The Honor of the Family," founded
on one of Balzac's inoBt powerful nov
els. "The Honor of the Family” Is
said to have been iwrformed with con
summate cleverness by Paul M. Pot
ter. Mr. Skinner will be seen In one of
those virile roles, a Napoleonic hero,
In which his admirers like him best.
He has the support of the beat dra
matic organisation that Mamigcr Froh-
man could secure. >Miss Percy llnawell,
his leading woman. Is known to he ono
of the most accomplished artists now
before the public, and the arduoua and
complex role which ape will portray In
"The Honor of the Family" will doubt
less furnish convincing proof of the
Versatile phases of her art.

Specialties.
Patrons of the popular Pastime The

Following this novel turn will be the
Musleiil Doyles. These people can get
hnnnony out of anything hut the Dem

litem lo play the "Holy City" on tin
enns; knock -Waiting at the Church"
from sheet Iron, handle a few cow bells
and there Will come forth "No Wed
ding Hell* for Me," thrum up a piano
and thu softest and sweetest sonatas

engagement. The attraction Is design
ed primarily for the children, but there
are few grown-ups who do not enjoy
seeing the animals,put through their
stunts.
But that’s only a port of the bill.
Frank Coombs and Muriel Stone In
their new. act, "The Last of the
Troupe," is one of the feature att

In the village of Kubevllle, and things
happen fast and frequently,
McCrea and Poole, “The men with
the Iron nerves." billed as the world's
leading crack shots, are an extra fea

and the spectators by aeelng how close
he can come to shootlng Poole's eye out
without doing It.
The best xylophone music ever heard
here la promised by the Martin broth-

than the exception. The matinees are
proving especially popular with the la
dles and children, and are given every

ANNA CHANCE IN "MR. PIPP" AT BIJOU.
“The Awakening of Mr.
Pipp” Comes Again With
Its Pretty Chorus Girls.
' Next week the Bijou will offer “The
Awakening of Mr. Pipp” for the delec-
totiog of Its patrons, always alive to
the merits of one that commends it
self. A well-known critic In writing
of the work ot Mr. Grapewln In the
second act of this play, said:
"It Is useless to go Into details of
what Mr. Grapewln did, for I saw it
last nlghtfand can only say. Charlev
Grapewln Is 'It.'" How rhuch title
criticism stands in Mr. .Grapewln'* fa
vor can be best understood when It l<
explained thnt the writer referred to the
scene in which Mr. Graptwln gives
aurh-a finished character study nf the
man who has been out for a "time" the
night before. But aa In the scene
boldly and endears hlniseff to you hy
reason of the fact that you have so oft
en seen his prototype In real life}
But while Mr. Grapewln Is the m:ig.
net around whom a large and well-
balanced company revolves, he Is by
no meapn the only attractive feature,
as there I* Anna Chance, nn actress „f
excellence, and a large and cnmelv
chorus of girls that wllh be, heard In a
series of tuneful catchy numbers. The
play Is rapid In action and II* thre
ad* move more briskly from one laugh
to another, a veritable kaleidoscope nf
merriment.
