New York, Oct. 5.—The local cotton mar

they showed a gain of only 6 to 9 points.
Although after the call an effort was made

were opposed to a rise and very little prog-

Americans In Loudon Irregular and sluggish.
Apathy prevailing In New York nnd expect
ed. Unpromising outlook for today's bank
statement given as a reason. Paris bourse
heavy nnd Berlin sluggish.
The Indications are for a pretty henry
ent In reserves In today’s bank statement.
Rumors of recdvershljvof Southern railway
helped depress tbe stock. President Finlay,
of th«> Southern railway, dcules the stories
emphatically.
Rinding statement for August is very
satisfactory.
Should reserves decrease heavily today
there would then lie more probability of de
posits by treasury department. The drain
to the south and west expected to lie
heavy for some time to come. Market will
probably he dull again today, with no ma
terial changes.
Market Improving on prediction of lictter
latnk statement than expected. If It should
prove to he correct, market would ndvauce
sharply.
Town Toplrt: Mors professions! backing

at least are n good ways from bottom.
Their activities will lie more pronounced
now in the Industrial Issues and especially
tho C’opper, Smelting nml Steel Issues. The
closing of mines Is lielug followed by (be
closing of smelters 111 tbe copper districts,
which will naturally l*e reflected In se

Investment demand talked of % nl-

place their fortuues In even the gllt mlgc

SOUTHERN DOESN’T
NEED RECEIVER
New York. Oct. B.—W. W. Finley,
president of the Southern railway, has
branded 'aa preposterous the rumor In
financial circles that hla road would
have receivers appointed for political
or other reasons. He added:
“Anybody familiar with the South
ern railway's financial condition must
know that there la no reason of a
financial nature for any such move.
An for the suggestion that the prop
erty might be put tn the hands of re
ceiver* by the Federal eburt* as a
means of thwarting political attacks,
that has been heard before. It has
never been seriously thought of by the
management, which haa elected. In
fact, to pursue a policy of conciliation. 1
Jockeys Fixed Race*.
Naw York, Oct E.—Tha stewards of
the Jockey Club have commissioned
the Pinkerton detective force to run

between three Jockeys and g coterie
of Weetern bookmakers a number of
