SPRINKLING OF GAINS
But Only Fractional — the
London Market For
Americans Quiet.
New York, October 7.—Today’s mar
ket came nearer even than It had at
any time la*t week to the stage of ab
solute stagnation. In the general list
prices weakened fractionally nt the
opening under moderate selling by for
eign houses, but hardened again later,
and at midday were back as a rule at
Saturday’s closing. What little Inter
est there was converged largely upon
a fetv stocks, which were moving spe
cial reasons. The Steel shares dropped
off a trifle nt the opening nt the new*
of .the contemplated building of a rival
steel plant by the Jones & Laugh I la
Steel Company, but good support was
extended on the decline nml both storks
held up ns well as anything on the day.
There was a renewal of liquidation in
Southern Railway common, which
reached a new low figure, but no light
was thrown on the true causes of it.
On the other hand, the unexpected an
nouncement of an extra dividend of
11-2 per cent on Great Northern pre
ferred caused a sharp rise In that stock,
and In Northern Pnclfie. In which simi
lar action Is anticipated at tomorrow s
meeting. The market In general, so
far as It moved at all, seemed to sym
pathise more with the strength of the
Dill shares than with the heaviness in
the other Issues.
