Ho went over to the table where the

looked at his watch. It was Just 2
o’clock. Then he lighted the -other
lights and threw the window curtains
baik, admitting a flood of glorious
moonlight.
"I am In for It now—and a hideous
mess It Is, too;” he said as he dressed
as rapidly as possible.
"Something must' be done, and at
once. To think that 1 have got the
body of, some foreigner in the, house
who may come tapping here'at the door
presently for All I know—and whom I
have got to bury In the family vault
In any cnao—should he really prove to
be dead this time! What am I going
to do?
"How am I going to get out of the
mers without creating a hideous scan-

and I don't know whether he Is renlly
dead or not. I must make sure about
that, nt all events."
Ily this time Prank whs dressed, and,
going quietly down the atalrs, he en

and rang up Dick—within live mlnutea

"Is thnt you, Dick?"
"Yes. sir."
"Welt; dress as quickly as possible
and bring the trap round to the door.
I want to pend you Into the village
with a very Important message.”
"All right, sir."
Then ho sat down and wrote a note
to the leading local practitioner.
“He won't know the difference,"
Frank said with a grim smile, as he
sealed the letter.
Before Dick arrived he had recover
ed sufficient nerve to re-enter the death
chamber and replace the 11(1 In Its prop,

barred the front door quietly and walk
ed down the steps as the trap drove up.
Surprise was writ very largo upon
Dick's face, but he gave no expression
to It In words.
"I want you to take this note to Dr.
Jenkins, Dick, and bring him back
with you. Don't spare the mare; it Is
Important.”
"All right, sir. Sorry I didn't catch
that young woman with the red para

she did me by five minutes. Left for
the north on the 9:45 train."
"I nm sorry for that.”
Dick showed all his tfletli.
"Ain't I Just.” said he as he drove
away. Prank closed the door Hoftly nnd
rebolted It—then went back to the li
brary and had recourse to his pipe.
"This thing must be thought out at
encc,” he said to himself. "Yes, at
once. It Is useless to ask how and why
I have got Into this accursed hole, and
what I have done to deserve it. I am
In It, and that Is all about It. Now,
what Is to be done?"
A' knock at the door Interrupted his
meditations.
Come In!" he shouted, nnd as If In
answer to a prayer Detective Loftus
entered the room.
■The very man!" Frank exclaimed,
springing to his feet and wringing thej
detective's hand warmly. "I am in a
deuce of a flx."
“Will It wait till 1 tell you my news?"
said Loftus. "1 have found the dia

"What!" Frank gasped.
"Yes," said Loftus. "It Is at Law

on Fifth avenue.”
“How did It get there?" asked-Frank
In amazement.
"A girl who used to be maid to the
baroness took It there yesterday,
have been shadowing her, and after I
saw her enter the door I went In and
asked a few questions. I—
"But I will take you to Lawrence’s
and there you can hear the rest of the
story yourself.
"Good heavens, Loftus!" returned
Frank. "let me tell you what I have on
hand."
He then relatea'hts grewsome discov

not know which, who was not Regi

"I'll tell you.” he said.at last, "there,
only one thing to be done. If this Dr.
Jenkins says the man Is dead, go on
with the funeral Just tht same. Then

Chicago, Oct. 14.—Driven to despair
by his Inability to rouse the stockhold
ers ft the Illinois Central railroad to
their danger, which he says threatens
the property, should Edward H. Harrl-
man continue to dominate It, Stuy-
vecant Fish Is preparing to make an
appeal to tile courts.
All of yesterday he remained closeted
with his attorneys, P. L. Burmelstcr
and II. A. Leeman, preparing a petition
asking the courts to enjoin any person
or corporation from voting any stock In
the coming annual meeting which may
be owned or controlled by the Union
Paclflc.
In anticipation, of this action William
Nelson Cromwell, one of the most noted
corporation lawyers In the country, Is
hastening toward Chicago, where he
will arrive today and take chargo of
the Harrlman Interests.
J. B. Dill, a no less noted corporation
attorney than Mr. Cromwell, has been
summoned to New York to take charge
of the I'Tsh events In the courts here.
Unless there Is *ome change In the pro
gram It Is likely that court proceedings
will be commenced today or tomorrow.
It Is understood to be Mr. Fish's pur.
pose to lay before the court all mis
inanngement which has come with the
Harrlman administration. The proceed

Frank and Detective Loftus went Into
the city.
Arrived at the famous Lawrence
establishment, Frank produced his card
and asked to see the senior member of
the Arm. Within three minutes' they
were seated In hie presence.
"This visit Is most apropott Mr.
Bracebridge," said he. "Indeed, you
And me In the very act of writing to
you with the request that you would
do me the favor to call here tomorrow."
"Oh. Indeed!" Frank added. “You
then have heard the news. You knew
my cousin, Reginald Bracebrldgo, very
well, I believe. An excellent customer
of yours, wasn't he?”
Trailing Suzanne.
The proprietor shrugged hts shoul
ders ever so slightly and smiled half
apologetically.
"Well. I know to what you are al
ludlng. Mr. Bracebridge." said he. "But
these things are always happening with
us. In the present Instance we knew
two things at least—that our money
was perfectly secure, and that per
sonally these transactions will be ar
il, quite so, of course. Is It much?"
“Well, I am not quite certain as to a
hundred or two. It Is a matter of
about 120,000, I should say; hut there
Is no hurry about that whatever,
was not writing to you upon this sub
ject at all, but, with relation to
jeci ni an, dui , wun relation ti
certain suspicious circumstance”—
"The visit of the young woman yes
terday; That Is exactly what brought
me here.'
The merchant adjusted his
spectacles and stared at Frank
hard.
“How on earth, sir," he began, when
Bracebridge Interrupted him again, and
pointed to Detective Loftus.
"Detective Loftus saw the young
woman, whom he had been shadowing,
enter your store yesterday." Frank
said. "I want to know her business
here, If you will tell me.”
"Well,” said he "to cut matters
short, she wanted to sell me the most
magnificent diamond necklace I have
ever seen, and you may Imagine that I
have seen some valuable gems In my
time."
Frank bowed assent.
"I had seen the necklace once be
fore. Your cousin brought It In and
asked to have three of the stones put
In It. It was very curious. Three of
the gems were missing and their places
were taken by huge unsightly pebbles.”
Frank vraened arm ''flunttv "
Frank grasped Loftus' arm. "Steady,'
said that astute Individual.
"We ransacked New York and Paris
and London, but we could not And any
stones to match those In slse. Finally
we were obliged to make careful Imi
tations, and we returned the stones and
necklace to Mr. Reginald with that ex
planation."
"You saved the case?" Inquired Frank
huskily, thinking of the two stones he
had carefully hidden In the lining.
"Oh. yes," said the proprietor. “Noth-
llshment like this. You never know
what Is going to be wanted.’"
An Appointment,
He continued;
"So you con Imagine that when this
young woman, evidently a maid, came
Into the shop with that necklace and
offered to sell It for $15,000 our sus
picions were aroused.
"Her explanations were far from
satisfactory; my flrat Impulse was to
detain her and send for the police.
But. upon reflection* I thought It bet
ter to be polite to her nnd say that If
she would leave the necklace with me
I would examine It, make a careful
estimate os to Its value, and pay her
the same In gold or notes, as she
might prefer, at noon tomorrow. The
unflnlshed letter before me was to ac
quaint you with these facts and re.
uest you to be present If you thought
t when the young lady called."
' You have acted most admirably In
this matter," Frank returned warmly.
"I have reasons for believing that you
have done me nn exceedingly great
service, and I thank you heartily. Punc
tually upon the stroke of noon I shall
be here tomorrow.”
Frank and Loftus left the Jewelry es.
tabllshment In high spirits.
•'We will be at the bottom of this
thing tomorrow at this time.” eald Lof
tus.
Frank left the detective after ar
ranging to meet him the next day at
noon at Lawrence's, and went to his
office.
He had traced Mueller to hie hiding
place; he knew that Suzanne and Muel.
ler were In each other's confidence;
he expected to have Susanna's confes
sion the next day. There were two
things missing—Reginald's child and
Vera Slavlnsky.
He might expect news of the child
through Suzanne, perhaps, but the
beautiful woman who had so enthralled
him, whom he had doubted, around
whom there still hung a veil of mys
tery, where was she?
His office boy entered, curiosity writ
ten upon his Inquisitive features.
"A lady to see you, sir," he said.
Frank took the dainty bit of card
board the lad handed, him and turned
pale with excitement ae he read this
name;
; Madame La Karonne Vera Slavlnsky ;
