■THE ATLANTA GEORGIAN AND NEWS. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 31. 1907. II WAS AGAIN STRONG Sharp Advances Occurred in Both Spots and Futures. SPOTS 22 POINTS UP As a Result Futures in American Markets Scored Sharp Advances. by tbe iuc uiaricct here this morning starts 7 to 18 points higher. Che feature abroad was heavy buying cred ited to Button & Co. This naturally lead to tbe conclusion that Button’s estimate would be low, tome figuring it under 11,500,- OOtL bales. Further strength dereloped after the call, and It was said that the leading outside op erator having covered his shorts was work ing for an upturn. The Liverpool market was again strong, and sharply better than due Thursday morning. The improvement was said to be duo to buying by Huston nnd tbe trade, on an estlmato thought to be 11,500,006 bales. Mr. Buston Is now in the Routh on bis annual tonr. The English market closed firm 15017 points higher. Rpots were advanced 16 points to <5.03 for middling. Sales continued ou a liberal scale, spinners taking 10.000 bales nt the advance. Tbe American markets were favorably af fected by the strength slwwu at Liverpool, assisted by a better feeling in tho spot mar ket generally. December In New York opened 14 points up at 10.58, sold up to 10.71 and at 12 o'clock was selling at 10.65. January opened 7 points higher at 10.18, sold up to 10.34 and at noon was selliug at 10.21. The sharp advance In prices during the morning induced realising, whlcfc, together with the putting out of fresh short lines, caused a break of 28 points on December and 25 for January from the high points, recovering slightly Just before the close, which was steady net 1 point lower to 3 points higher. Tenders new docket 4,000 bales. Liverpool sends us sharp advances over our close. The Improving stock mar' terdny, together with the ease In cal rates, had as much as anything to l the rallies In cotton. This Improvement In the financial outlook caused some excellent Wall street buying and short covering the part of pit Interests. The raliriug tendency can not fall to eucourage Southern spot holders who have resisted all desire to liquidate on the weak markets lately. Many claim that the big forelgu demand will be shown In sharp advances. We are Inclined to favor purchases from now on, ns the outlook seeuis to have shown a de elded change over night. Think It well to take In shorts and go long at these levels. This advance, due to buying by Rchlll and Weld, caught the ring short. Private cable from Liverpool says: “Bus- ton’s buying caused strength.” Trading In December extremely difficult. Do not believe squeeze Is over. Hutton a heavy seller on call. Reems to have a lot for sale. Following are 11 n. ni. fdds: December >.70. January 10.30, March 10.37, May 10.41. New Orleans, Oct. 31.—Hayward, Vick & Clark: Lot* of cables coming In. If the hanks would help there would he a good hiisluess. As It Is. money has to come from abroad to move cotton, ami that makes it a slow business. Liverpool cables; “Huston's friends nnd concerns bought between 12.000 nnd 20,ono bales on his crop views, which are believed to lie around 11,800,090. > % Hhort Interest large nnd badly frightened. Looks like a scare and higher. This will be n bad week. Expect consid erable loss In field and consequent support In time to the market, nud while the reac tion may have gone far enough for present and considerable depression come yet, we would change to the buying policy ou all set-backs. Tremendous cold wave forming lu the Northwest. Expect heavy freeze curly tiexl week. Indications are that It will strike western licit. Basis for good middling here Is lower. This Is but natural, as futures have gone up so much. Hear good middling trading nt 60 points on December uow. Edited by Joseph B. Lively. Liquidation by Mayor <fc Co. loans by ttust coin unities and banks today. Liquidation seems to hnvo liecu started again. Town Topics: We regard the improved tone In the market as almost entirely due to short covering. Smoe Investment buying Is going on nil tho time, to be sure, but It Is not reaching auch proportions ns to In- finance the market to any great extent. Besides, the banking Interests In present circumstances would be tbe first to disap prove of any nttcuipt to Initiate n bull movement, and consequently, while tho market may rally a trifle further, wc think It will be checked by wholesale offerings «*f nhM-k bought recently to prevent demorali zation. Resides, there Is still a great deal of liquidation that the market must face. The gold movement Is eminently satisfac tory, but the general flunnclal and Indus trial situations are not favorable. Lower dividends in tho case of Important railroads will also serve to chill bullish ardor, aud even the Union Pacific distribution will ac crue to the benefit of the ladders of convert ible bonds and preferred stock, as well as the common. We look for an early turn lu the market to the downward side again with especial pressure on the Industrial list. The copper inctal position Is decidedly weak, notulth- standing the movement phrortd. where It is found much easier to carry the metal than here.
