..... AND WOMANS INTERESTS
SUNSET ON 'ND.AN a R.VE v R: n80ng
Come! let us wonder adown the long
path by the river.
There where the reeds and the rushes
still quiver with rapture
As when the Sun-god first tvaked them
to life In the morning;
Amber and rose the opaline sky to the
westward.
And the salt-wlnd waves a welcome to
world-weary aliens.
Lambent and lurid the light as It falls
on the waters.
Kails on the shores that are shining In
' shallows and eddies.
Save where the shadows are hiding be-
vond in the morass.
Dim with the tangle of vines that the
heron's nest hldeth.
Crouching In darkness to shelter her
younglings from danger.
Surely Pan lurks there and kisses hla
Angers in mocking
To'th* shy wood-nymph laving her feet
in the streamlet
Stealing so soft through the hammock
to hide'In the river.
Low lap the ripples that break on the
hank near the pathway,
Bathing the roots of the palms as they
reach put far-leaning.
Clapping their serrated hands In an
ecstasy tuneful.
There soars a gull! He Is wild with the
rapture of flying,
.Veering and tacking beyond In ethereal
spaces
Till he Is lost In the mist ns he sails
out to seaward.
Far to the south lies the line of the land
where the sand-dunes
Meet the wild surge of the billows that
hurtle upon them.
Hushing and roaring through miles of
tumultuous travel.
HAfk! 'tls the voice of the ocean that
sounds In the silence.
Calling to tbeo, O my Soul, ns Eternity
calieth,
Nor will be stilled though the laughter
he loudest nt noonday.
Nor In the midnight by revels of wine
and of dnnelng.
Now when the venpertlde comelh the
coll Is like music
Sounding so solemn and slow from the
Orgaji of Hsaven:
Nunc Dtmltls chants the choir In an
tiphons! concord;
Nature and Night from Earth's Chan
cel are singing triumphant;
Amen and Amen! the ocean respondent
adoring!
Thus dies the day. am! all swiftly the
darkness descending
Kails like a curtain around the death-
couch of the sleeper.
Sweet be thy slumbers, my Soul, thy
long dreaming he peaceful.
Till we awake to the glory and gladness
of Morning!
