ntj AJJjAiVTA fjftUKUIAN AND N~EWE3. mniiAT, NOVEMBER Ifc LEONARD BRINGS CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MESSAGETO PUBLIC Introduced to Vast Audience at Grand by F. L. Seely. SHAKE IT OFF An Immense audience, which filled nearly every seat In orchestra and bal cony, gathered at the Grand Opera House Sunday afternoon at 8 o'clock to hear Frank H. Leonard, of Brook lyn, one of the most eminent Christian Scientists of America, deliver an ad dress on Christian Science, Mr. Leonard Is a member of the Christian Science board of lectureship of the First Church of Christ, Scien tist, of Boston, and his ability as lecturer and his profound knowledge of the principles of his faith Instructed ' nnd entertained his hearers throughout tils discourse Sunday aftemooa Mr. Leonard was Introduced by F. L Seely, publisher of Tbs Georgian, who said: "I deem It an honor to be here to day—to be with people who look up and who walk In the sunshine. An em inent divine took ms to task for con senUng to participate in this service today, basing his criticism on the Idea that Scientists do not glorify Christ, but that they more or less dignify Mrs. Eddy. "My reply to him was that my wil lingness to accept your Invitation was because Scientists do glorify Christ and God, and that If some »how an un- usual amount of lova of Mn. Eddy It Is the fault of the individual and not of Christian Science." Mr. Seely dtscuaeed briefly the prin ciple* of Christian Science and declared that its purpose Is not to supplant primitive Christianity, but to make It more practical. In conclusion he said “I do not Indorse your faith. I may be unable to. You do not call me wrong; you do not Indorse mine—-you may be beyond It. I bid you god speed. The world Is growing better. Is growing richer and happier. Science may be to other beliefs what our wire less tslegraphy Is to the poet routes of Washington's time. I hope II; W be so. God is visible in It to the direst skeptic and no man can say but that Ita followers live lives of enviable de votion nnd calm." Mr. Seely then Introduced Mr. Leon ard, who spoke as follows: I believe no one can successfully analyze or present any subject to an other when hia statements relative thereto are based solely on an academic or theoretical knowledge of it. The burden of proof rests with the speaker, who can never speak with authority until he has made a personal demon stration of the principle governing any subject under discussion: and when he has done this his theoretical learning is superseded by practical knowledge, and he is fitted to discuss that particular subject because he knows whereof he speaks. That there may be no misunder standing as to whether my knowledge of Christian Science Is theoretical ot practical, I am going to give you a brief statement of my reason for accepting and adhering to It for more than twen, ty years. I waa bom with an incurable organic disease that had made my life, up to tho time I learned of Christian Science, one of pain, fear and hopelessness, and I had reached the point in my existence where dissolution seemed certain. "Man’s extremity Is Ood'a opportuni ty," for, after having about three months' treatment from a Christian Science practitioner, my organic trou ble was entirely destroyed, and for the nrst time In my life I knew the Joy of health. That was In ISIS, nnd from that day to this Christian Science, as revealed to the world through Mrs. Kddy, has met every diseased condition ns it presented itself to me, has de stroyed it and given me freedom. 1 am a Christian Scientist today because 1 am proved, to my entire satisfaction that above all things else Chrlitian Sci ence Is both tronscendently and prac- lOMfly the moot precious of all the Good of which human consciousness can conceive. It is from the etandpoint of having proved Christian Science and its eternal efllcacy In removing and destroying ''all the ills that flesh Is heir to,” that I shall address you. Christian Science recognises nothing ss having reality that la not eternal; I trust you will clearly understand when. In the course of my remarks, the real ity of anything Is questioned; I mean thereby It le not Immutable and God like; Is to be overcome and destroyed, hence Is not eternal, therefore not real. Mrs. Eddy started the Investigation which led to the revelation of Christian Science, from the fundamental hails that God Is all In all. Btartlng from this basis disclosed the Principle which actuated Jesus the Christ and made possible his demonstrations of healing nnd the overcoming of the world, the flesh and the dsvll or evil, which were left by him for man's guidance In all ages. Doesn't Deny Christ Many statements have been made that Christian Science denies God and the Cbriot. I don’t believe In statistics in lectures as a rule, but I know It will be Interesting information to all to know that, within tho six hundred pages of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" reference Is made to God about twelve hundred times, and to Jesus the Christ about eight hun dred times, which la an average of over time times td each page in the entire i.n,,k In every Instance the reference brings out a more exalted thought rel ative to both God and Christ. Chrlettan Science text book Mr*. Eddy's definitions. These 'definitions set at reet and question as to the exalted po sition In the teachings of Christian Science accorded to both God and Jesus Christ. Another frequent statement Is that the Christian Scientists discard the Bible of Christianity and use In Its place "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,” the Christian Science text book written by Mrs. Eddy. Noth ing could be more untrue, for the dis cernment of the "Spirit” of the "Word" which “Maketh alive," and that Is what Christian Science Is, comes only as the result of constant study of the Bible with the aid of “Science and Health," which Is what Ita title Indicates, the ’Key to the Scriptures." Christian Science tehches belief In the one Indivisible God, the divinity of the Christ, In the eternallty of the Holy Spirit, and in the teachings of the in spired Scripture. At this point all sim. Ilarity between its teachings and those commonly accepted cease, because Christian Science reveals to us God as "a very present help In trouble" now, without discriminating as to the kind of trouble; while the ordinary teach ings put off the promised help until an undesired future after death, and even then for most of us makes It rath er doubtful. Christian Science teaches us to live and win, while theology has taught us we had to die to win. Chrls- tlon Science teaches us what life Is and how to live It. and Is worthy the most exhaustive investigation. ' God as a supposed creator of good and evil, ot Life and death, Is not the God we Christian Scientists know, nor I* He the God of which the Inspired Scriptures teach us. The Bible tells us that God Is good, nnd that He Is omnipotent, omniscient nnd omnipres ent, nnd the same yesterday, today and forever. Thl» being true, that whl-h He creates or does must be always t. j same and nlways good. How, then (to be logical), could He give Life nnd Life be good, and then give death nnd have dentil be good? When Life was good what would become of death, nnd when death was good what would be come of Life? Let us look at It from another point. . Annihilate Each Other, If God created both Life and death, and they are a part of His finished ere. atlon, and therefore as eternal aa theli Creator, how can they both exist eter nally, when one 1s as certainly the an nlhllatlon of the other os light Is of darkness? Again, we are taught that the "wages of sin Is death;” If this la true, then ... that God, If He be the creator of death, Is the creator of sin. You can not escape this con clusion by saying that He only permits sin, for to permit It He must know it, and how can He know It when the Bi ble teaches us "God Is of purer eyee than to behold evil and can not look on Iniquity.' The Christian Scientists have not yet reached the point where they have overcome the universal belief In death, nor have they yet reached the point where they cure every rase brought to them, but, like the Prodigal Son, they have started on their Journey back to their Father's house, nnd shall dis cern that haven of rest and be at peace In His sheltering Love. If Infinite Mind ever had for one Instant an Idea, perception or concep tion of sin, In that very Instant It ceaaed to he absolutely sinless. You may aa well assert that an Immovable object and an Irresistible force can oc cupy the same place at the eame time that love and hate, truth and a lie. In telligence and non-intelligence are all synonymous, as to cling to the unseem, ly belief that the good God creates, permits, sees or knows sin. God, after He finished His creative work, called It "very good” and rested. Look around you nnd see the misery, shame, dishonesty. Immorality, degra dation and crime that morial man Is steeped In. and tell me, le It "very good?" Can you conceive of the Im mutable, good God, able to make His children to reflect Himself, looking down on such things and enjoying them? No. a thousand time*, no; such a thing la utterly Impossible. These things ran not be clung to os real, but ouslde of nnd apart from God, for He is omnipresent. Then we are forced to admit either that the Christian Bclence' teaching as to the unreality of sin Is true, or els* that God Is Infinitely bad. Is There No 8in? It there no sin? Yes, as long as peo. pis believe so, and so long a* they indulge In the belief In It, they shall suiter for it, and there ran be no hope of pardon so long aa It I* Indulged In. Christian Science teaches that the only way to escape the penalty of sin Is to stop sinning!' When sin Is aban doned and destroyed, there Is nothing left to be forgiven or suffered for and man Is free. Sin has no place In the divine creation, Is not of God and. In reality, does not exist. The great sin for which people suffer the belief In a power apart from God. God Is the only Creator and. If such a power exist. He must have cre ated It. If It la true, and who will question It, that "A double minded man Is unstable In all hi* ways," what hope would there be for us In seeking salva. tton If God be "double minded" and has done this thing? He la the same "yesterday, today and forever," and so this power. If It exists, must be the same “yesterday, today and forever," making of evil an eternal reality. In order that sin may be committed A CARPET Opportunity In Which You ^Vill Find Some Particularly Advantageous Offerings—Rem nants, You Might Call Th em Not exactly remnants, all of tkem-—yet verging toward the remnant stage. Chamherlm-Johnsori-DuBose Co. that there may be temptation there must be sin, and they must both come from the same source. Is that eource God or mankind? If tt be God we are lost, but If It Is mankind we may be saved. Are Many Theories. It It Impossible to reconcile all the many theories concerning God, and bring them Into one harmonious whole, so long as He Is believed to be the creator of both good and evil. The world seems unwilling to accept Chris, tlan Science chiefly because It Is differ ent In practice and precept from the commonly accepted Ideas about God, even though It Is the llrst application of Jesus’ teachings, since He wa* on earth, that ha* healed the sick from a purely spiritual nnd, therefore, from a purely Good or Godly basis. I There are In the world today nearly 150 different Christian sects. Don’t you think this condition might well be called the modern Babel? Looking at the history of Christian ity what do we (Ind? That the world has seen moYe brutality, criminal In genuity and fiendish torture perpe trated In the name of Christ than In any other. ’ Had Christiana been obedient to the command. "Prove all things, hold fast that which Is good,” no such record of sorrow, death and division would have been possible. There would be no one on earth today who would hold the gen tle, loving Christ or God In averelon or contempt If It were not for th# com monly accepted belief that God I* the creator of evil or permits It. This very teaching has been th* stumbling block to countless thousands, driving them to agnosticism and atheism? The fear of the Lord, which we must have. Is "the beginning of knowledge," and "the beginning of knowledge” Is "to hate evil.” Our existing bondage la the result of the "fear taught' by the precepts of men," and we shall be free In propor tion aa we refuse longer to submit to Ita domination and begin to "hate evil." Christian Science ha* laid the ax at the root of all evil belief and fear, by teaching us that God la and there la nothing else. It Is teaching us dally to more really and nearly know God, and to know that He la the Mind that wa* In Christ, the God which Christ knew. As we know God as Mind, and all His creation to be In agreement with Him—ee we cast one side the old man made beliefs about God—we pause in wonder that so many ages could p*«* Cheney’s Expectorant cures coughs, colds. No discovery was ever made by man •until he was prepared for It, and th# revelation of Christian Bclence could not come until endeavor had turned actively Into the mental realm for cause; not cause that agreed with mut able things, but genuine, Immutable Cause that agrees with the "substanco of things hoped for.” Revelation to Mrs. Eddy, The revelation of Christian 8dene# came to Mrs. Kddy aa the reshlt of a life-time spent In continuous desire and search for the Spirit of the Word. Mrs. Eddy occupies a position unique In the history.of the world. Shq stands alone In her chosen vocation oa a re ligious reformer, as the advocate of. that unqualified trust In God, that un swerving faith In Hla goodness, that absolute, unquestioning obedience to His commands, which demands of her such a llfd of self-sacrlflce, meekness and humility that she could never live It save Under the protecting care of a real, livable, demonstrable religion, wherein she finds Immunity from thu range and agonies attendant upon the footsteps of those who break away from old theories about God and man ifest realization of His presence. Ever since 1866 Mrs. Eddy’s life ha* been devoted to the revelation of salvation to mankind, and she ha* tolled and la bored to that end with a singleness of purpose that has placed man In a po sition today where he can not avoid realising that her work Is Inspired, and where hr can not avoid the acceptance of Christian Science as the Spirit of the Word of Jesus portrayed. With the aid of the Word aa revealed through "Science and Health," man kind Is learning how to overcome hate with love, selfishness with brotherll- nese, sickness with health, and death with Life. "Science and Health" brings to ue a realization of the Illimitable richness of the spiritual treasures of the Bible, and disclose* the Slprit ot the Word so that we know love for God to be Innate, and salvation Intrin sic In man. Because It la doing this. It has proved Its right to be called the "Key to the Scriptures,” for Jesus said, "By their fruits ye shall know them." Instances almost without number are on record of people who have been healed of so-called Incurable diseases Just by the reading of this book. Those hungering and thirsting after right eousness. not finding In the teachings commonly accepted the works that satisfy, have found in this book the living fulfillment of Christ's promise, "If ye shall ask anything In My name, " will do It," and have been saved. In Ita closing chapter, called "Fruit age,” are recorded a number of tha cases of healing through reading the book, the original testimonials in many of the cases being In the possession of the editor of the "Christian Science Journal" and the "Christian Science Sentinel." Do Not Worship Mrs. Eddy. We Christian Scientists do not wor ship Mrs. Eddy.
