burglar alarms were turned In Satur
day 1 night and the police are busily
working on the cases. Two liquor
houses were first entered. Cassidy
Bros, suffered a slight loss from a
burglary perpetrated shortly after mtd-
nlght. Harris A Co. also came near
suffering from the work of burglars,
but thla time there waa only an at
tempt.
On Cherry street a residence was en.
tered and some valuable Jewelry was
taken. At a second residence, situated
on Third afnet, an attempt was made
to enter a window when the occupants
were aroused and their noise and the
screama caused rapid flight. Three pa.
trolmen responded In time to witness
the firing of three shots from a re
volver at the fleeing inan.

States court In a sensational suit for
110,000 alleged damages, filed by
Charles M. Vet, now a resident of Jack
sonville. Fla., against T, W. Hooks,
Blount Freeman, Daniel Driggers and
A. J. Cowart, nil prominent dtlsens of
Dublin, Ga> the Issue was made clear
when all the defendants tiled answer*
to the complainant. They deny having
done him any wrong.
At the close of the Dublin schools last
summer Vet. who Is a -mu.lc teacher,
claims to have been called from his
room by the defendants one night, and,
when he wne enticed Into the dark
street, he was severely Injured. De
velopment* show that tho difficulty
aross over the practice for the com
mencement exercises. Vet having occu.

term debate between the Phi Delta and
the Ciceronian literary societies of
Mercer College was held at the chapel
Friday night. The eubject for discus
sion was:
"Resolved, That the tendency toward
civilisation was desirable." The Clc-
eronlan upheld the affirmative and were
represented by Parker Moeeley from
Rockmart, Ga., of the clan of ’98, and
A. A. Lummus of McDonough, Go., of
the class of ’«5. The Phi Deltas spoke
In defense of the negative and were
represented by W« 1’. Wright, of Ma
con, of the class of ’09, and James C.
Kates, of Covington, Ga., of the clast
of ’10.
The judges were: Rev. D, N. Me-
Louchlln, Professor R. W. Edcnfleld

rendered In favor of the negatives.
