Dec. 18.—As we predicted, there has been no lack of market snusattons during the past week. Tho glnners' report on Monday morning was so small as to cause many to look for a bureau eatlmuto below 11,000,000 and possibly as low as 10,- 600,000, based upon tne old habit of under estimating Indulged In by the bureau for so many years. For the time being Sec-[ retary Wilson’s newspaper statement that the crop would be the third largest on rcc^ ord was forgotten, but he made his prom ise good In his report of Tuesday, which estlmatod the crop at 11,678.000 balsa. ex-J elusive of (Inters, or In plain words, a com mercial crop of 12,000,000 bales. The bulls were taken completely by aur-l prise and their anxious liquidation caused a drop of over $3 per bale during the two re maining hours of Tuesday's sesslou.' There was still further liquidation and lower prices on Wednesday, ond the low level then touched represented a decline of over 34 per bale from the high point at the end of last week. The determined attitude of the farmer baa already borne practical fruit. Althoug! futures declined after the bureau nearl; 184 per hale, holders of cottqn refused to sell at nu^ such decline. Speculative shorts soon found their position a precarious one, and when they attempted to cover, price* roso with a rush and nearly all the loss waa regained In a few hours. Once futures were restored to the spot basil, then a new era began, and there la every reason now to expect that futures, for soma time to come.i will closely follow the demand and offer ings In the spot markets. It mast not »>e forgotten that a good many people still helluva that the govern ment estimate means a crop of 12,600,000 or possibly 13,000,000 bales, but. as we have atready pointed out, they will find no aup- port, at least, for many months to come. Bache & Co.: It Is learned from an authority In United States Steel Corporation, that the finance committee decided lost week to send out notices recalling: the order to cut wages, w'hlch reductions In some Instances to amount to 30 per cent Thla change was adopted as a matter of policy. It was feared on ac- • Ottnt Of large earnings It would bring odious comparisons. It Is also under stood that politics entered Into It, for it has been decided that support Is to be given to Republican party from now on by Steel Corporation. Substantially all the other large capitalistic interest* are also said to have reached the same conclusion. New York Financial Bureau: Improve ment this week In the stock market stond- g ctr- -Hying against the shorts. Today’s operations will probably at first bo characterised by con tinued professional hammerings, although there was abort covering toward the close Saturday by professionals In anticipation of a good bank atateraent, which expecta tion was fulfilled. We would prefer “ “ * di advances, not on decline*. Supporting orders still remain toward 44 In Amalgamated. On finding buying ordera toward in Smelting professionals hare covered. St Paul continues to be ham mered bv the room, beln'g specially sold on rallies ror turns on account of rumored liquidation. The same Is true of New York Central and Sugar. Northern Pacific should be bought on a scale down. Rending Is re< -— ‘-Hat* supported toward price would go lower, —‘ below, _ a Pg* eifle meets good support toward 70. Union Pacific Is being bought by Insldera On a scale down. It seems in a sagging move that may be turned any time. We are not bearish on this stock. Morgan buying or- d^r* ure reported on Steel preferred around Town Topic*: While the Increase In the snklng reserves certainly shows an lin- roving condition among our financial Instl- lous deficit In the legal renuirem . ng made up. Then It must be remem- that the numerous clearing house TRADE IN STOCKS Not Large Enough to Indi cate Whether Market Was Weak or Strong. NO PRESSURE* TO SELI Buying Orders Were Few. ■ Copper Stocks Were Firm Early. Consequently we may slow improvement that, besides discount# nanclng anything like a bull movement In the stock market, the banking interests will continuo to call loans nod Insist; ou the payment of maturing obligations. This, In our opinion, will render precarious the posi tion of many stock market pools, during the next thirty days, and will be tne cause of repeated weakness In prices which will en courage bearish aggressiveness. New York Central Is reflecting dividend and financing development!, and we regard this Issue ns being on tho verge of break ing to prices much below any yet recorded during the year. Pennsylvania, In sympathy .and for simi lar reasons of her own, has a downward tendency, and we would sell both stocks on all strong spots. In fact, the railroad list generally Is now about as reactionary -- *he Industrial department on account of exceedingly unfavorable net earnings that are being reported. , Union Pacific Is the feature of an active market for Americans In the early London tradlug. The Southern mill representatives In this city State that they are not willing to accept export busi ness at the low values at which brokers are seeking to close contracts. The few Instances where they let goods out last month have been taken as a sign that the entire market wa* weaker. The readjustment that ia being made Is gradual and Is not detrimental to the'trade, ns It Is fostering buying. The only class fit trad er* who are not In good shape are the cot ton good* converters, nnd they are havlni trouble with their flntshed products atn also with the gray goods coming forward ti them. On the finished goods they can noi fore* sales and the print cloth mills are keeping them up to their contracts for convertibles.
