to blow safes, la believed to have acci
dentally exploded 600 quarte of nitro
glycerine at tho Dupont Powder Com
pany’s magazine, near here, today. Only
a few fragments of the man were
to be found. The total damage Is es

of the fact 'that President Roosevelt
denied saying that. "If I caused the re
cent panic I’m glad of It." Mayor Dahl-
man, of Omaha, has come back with a
statement, changing the original text
of the quotation. He says:
"The president said: ‘Well, you tell
the boys out West that this financial
panic Is being placed on my shoulders
by reason of the position I have taken.
If this Is true, It shows that we wero
on a rotten foundation, and It only
came a few months sooner than It
would have done otherwise, and It
shows we needed a house cleaning. You

Valdosta, Oa., Dec. 17.—News was re
ceived here of the severe beating of a
young man, Lendlus Darley, nt Kinder
Lou, on Saturday night. He was taken
from his boarding house by masked
men and carried away, and, when he
failed to return, his relatives believed
he had been killed, and a search was
made for his body. He reappeared at
the home of his brother. In this city,
Iste last night. The young man con
firmed the report of the whipping.
