Lamar won the company medal offered by the Macon Volunteers when the company Inspection was held. The Inspection was not for the best drilled man, but the one whose equip ment, including his uniform, gun, locker, shoes and other articles that were In the best condition. C., Dec. 18.—An elope ment, planned by Miss Katharine Barns, the pretty 14-year-old daugh ter of Captain William Barns, of Alex ander, N. C., anil Frederick Evans, aged 22, was frustrated by the girl’s father on Monday. Miss Barns and Evans met secretly Sunday night and planned to elope the following morning. Cap tain Barns missed his daughter and, suspecting an elopement, set out for Asheville, nnd overtook tho elopers within eight or ten miles of this place. According to Barns’ statement, he ad ministered a severe beating to Evans and left him In a thicket nlong the roadside. He made his daughter got Into his buggy and took her home.
