Recorder Broyles will Wednesday
morning: endeavor to solve the mystery
In the shooting of John Chastain, who
Is now lying dnngerously wounded In
his home In the rear of 470 Decatur-at.,
with a pistol ball somewhere In hla
head.
Chastain was shot Saturday night In
hla home, the bullet entering fust be
neath the chin, ranging upward, and
lodging In the head. R. C. Williams
has been arrested by Policemen Han
nah and Barton, suspected of having
had something to do with the shooting,
and will be tried Wednesday morning.
Williams protests that he la Innocent,
declaring that Chastain shot himself.
The officers, however, state that the
wounded man denies this, Insisting that
some one else shot him.
Williams admits being In the Chas
tain home 8atnrday night, but says he
left Just before the shooting. Williams
Is under bond of 1100.

begun today In the case against Editor
Harden, accused of libeling Count Von
Moltke and other Knights of the Round
Table, a halt social and half political
organisation, which amounted for years
practically to the kalier-a unofficial

be rendered Thursday.

by the Baptist churches of Atlama for
a spring evangelistic campaign. At
the close of the Baptist ministers’
meeting Monday morning'the commit
tee In charge of the campaign held a
meeting and discussed plans for the
future. This committee Is composed of
Dr. John F. Purser, chairman; Rev. Dr.
John D. Jordan, Rev. Dr. J. W. Millard,
Rev.. R. L. Motley and Rev. John E.
Briggs. Every effort will be made to
make this campaign one to be remem
bered. and It Is believed that great
good will result.*

EXTENDS BONDS
Birmingham, Ala., Dec. 31.—The
stockholders of the Alabama Great
Southern railroad met In the local of
fices of the company Tuesday morning
and extended tho first mortgage, 6 per
cent bonds of the company, which mu-
tifro January 1. 1908. until 1927. The
Interest on tho bonds was decreased
from 6 to 6 per cent.

When C. B. Brown, of 162 McAfee-st..
an employee of the American Can Com
pany, was arraigned before Kecordei
Broyles Tuesday morning, evidence was
presented to show that he hail called
hla mother-in-law a liar and had oth
erwise talked roughly to her.
L. H. Smith, of 69 Lovejny-st.,
Brown’s brother-in-law. was the main
witness against him. lie testltled that
Brown got drunk the day of his mar
riage, May 6. last, and that he had been
drinking, ever since. Smith, who Is a
member of the fire department, declar
ed that Brown had been very abusive
to Mrs. Smith, his mother.
Mrs. Brown, bride of the prisoner,
took sides with her husband against
her brother, and declared her family
had been barraaslng her since the day
she married Brown. She said they
were continually trying to separate
. them.
